We use an Igloo brand ice maker. No complaints yet after, I think, four years?

We have a Chef Tested by Ward that we recently purchased used for $50. This thing works great. In about 4 hours this thing makes enough ice for the two of us to last for 4-5 days. We leave it on the counter while we travel without issue. We keep the ice in a one gallon Ziploc bag in the freezer. I'm sorry we waited so long before buying a portable ice maker.

We have a “Frigidaire” from Costco. No issues with it. Just pull the drain plug and dry it out inside when storing. Think it was on sale for around $70. Website shows $99.99 right now.

Thanks for the replies everyone. One thing I forgot to ask about these is, can you leave the ice in the machine while using or does it melt if not removed?

That is a good question. When I was looking for one a couple of years ago I discovered there are brands that will keep the ice, somewhat. The one we have does keep the ice but the ice will melt a little over time and the water just drips back into the water reservoir below and when the ice level gets low and it kicks back on. Same way when we turn it off for the night. Ice melts and then we just turn it back on in the morning.

Interesting BobinICT. That is what I seem to be hearing as well. Some will keep the ice frozen and some machines it melts if not used fairly quickly...

I know this thread is a little older, sorry. We have a countertop ice maker, Igloo I believe. We dump the ice in a plastic bowl and then just throw it in the freezer, eventually getting a big chunk of ice. Does anyone use an ice bucket? I want a Yeti one, they offer a Veterans Discount so it makes it a little cheaper. Was wondering if anyone has a Yeti ice bucket or even the RTIC one that is less expensive, thoughts, experiences with them, or yet another alternative.

We've had an RCA since March, 2017 with no problems. Just make sure it is drained and completely dry before putting it away. Our daughter used hers constantly on her countertop, would let it melt and remake. But then it got mold growing on the inside and was quite the ordeal in cleaning it out. Lesson here is to bag the ice, yes it freezes into a block, and drain and dry lthoroughly between uses or the unit is going to be stored.

We used to do the same thing with the same results, we now use gallon ziplock bags and put it in the freezer, when we want ice we are able to break it up in the bag and avoid the large chunks.

Ours is a Frigidare. Had it for a couple of years now. We also dump it regularly and keep the ice in gallon zip lock freezer bags in the freezer. Just takes a drop or two on the counter to break back up enough to use and am pleased with how much ice we can keep and stock up on before a few days boondocking. We have the rear desk in our 320 MKS and store it under on travel days and can plug it in on the desk without using active counter space as the desk space is more than adequate.
