  • Travel from DFW to Destin Florida

Next week we head to Destin from Dallas Texas area. Anyone traveled that way? Have a recommendation on the route? I’m not looking to make record time. I’d rather have smooth sailing and least amount of traffic. Thanks in advance.

We have never come from the West, only from the North. We enjoy that area and are there frequently in the winter.

An easy 2 day drive either way you choose. I prefer freeways because they have no traffic lights, high clearance, and easy to get to fuel stations. You'll likely hit construction. Plan around morning and evening traffic.

If you decide to take I-20 through Shreveport, I highly recommend using I-220 loop to avoid the road conditions through Shreveport and Bossier City on I-20.

Probably too late...but since Destin is close to my home here's my .02. Avoid Hwy 98 as much as possible (you probably know this by now). The Crestview exit (53) off of I-10 can be very congested during morning and evening rush hour. Go south on 85 and follow the signs to the toll bridge into Destin is the easiest route.

I-10 across Louisiana was unbelievably bad the last time I traveled that route...take your time or the suspension on the trailer will take an awful beating.

Completely true as of 2 months ago as well. It's terrible.

howson Verified that i10 in Louisiana is terrible. The camper definitely took a beating. Saw this as we got into Destin.

Glad you made it safe. I know it's a bit late but:

Being from LA, I can attest that their roads probably rank #1 in the south for lack of smoothness and in the top 5 nationwide.

I20 is much better but I don't know that area. It is however the shortest route across the state to Mississippi where the roads tend to be smoother.

An i10 casualty. The door mounting screws were ripped from the wood. Kept wondering why the door wasn’t closing right haha.
