  • Mattresses?

Sat down on the Queen Black Label mattress and DID NOT like how it felt. Not much cushion. Felt like padded plywood. We are taking the camper out this weekend for the first time. Dreading sleeping on it, but you never know... the bunkhouse beds have same Brand. Anyone switch these out to a camper weight friendly mattress that is comfortable? Mattress toppers? Curious what you all may have done and what brands. Thanks

We bought a 4 inch foam mattress topper from Amazon. We are a lot more comfortable now and the deep pocket sheets we use fit much better too!

Cool! You put that over the Black Label or whichever came with your camper?

We just added a topper as well. They do add weight but not as much as a full "good" mattress. The shocks for the under bed storage still hold up when opened.

We did the same with the topper and its been satisfactory for three seasons. Once things reverted back to being uncomfortable, we rotated the mattress and recovered some comfort but a new mattress is ultimately in our future.

      Now what to buy??

There's a couple of issues when swapping out for a regular mattress. First, the headboard is too low so you can't push the mattress all the way against the wall. (Solution below!) The second issue is the shocks probably won't be strong enough to hold up the new mattress. You can work around that, too. (Just want you to be aware of what you're getting into before you start!)

For the headboard: I found the headboard is held on the wall by screws hidden by small caps. After unscrewing the headboard from the wall I tucked the upper left and right corners of the headboard between the wall and curtain frame. I then was able to move it high enough to provide enough clearance for the head of the new mattress to sit flush against the wall and make it easy to tuck in sheets, etc. The headboard looks properly centered, too.

For the shocks under the bed I swapped out the OEM's for 150lb shocks. I had to reinforce where they connect, though, as the OEM screws pulled right out due to the pull of the stronger shocks. As you'll see below I bolted a piece of wood to the underside of the plywood and then used longer (and more!) screws to attach the shock's end piece to the thicker wood. It's held up great (so far) over multiple trips and usage.

Just about anything will be better than the original "weekender" mattress. That mattress was only good for small kids! We tried the whole topper/foam/whatever route and (for us) nothing worked until we got a real mattress.

We had a Reflection 303 and went through an iteration of standard home mattress, a 4" topper on that, a foam mattress (terrible rock) from Costco and finally got a Leesa. It fit fine in the Reflection and is now in the Solitude 310. No problem with clearance or lifting the bed. Decided the camper was more comfortable than home, and now have a Leesa at home as well.

Similar story here . . . we went with a foam topper on the original mattress for a couple of years until we upgraded to an Endy mattress (Canadian manufacturer). I replaced the original lift struts with stronger ones for the foam topper, but had to add a second pair (four total) to lift the 10” Endy. I had to reinforce the strut attachments similar to what Howard did.

I have seen the Leesa advertisements. May be worth a look. Looks like there are some definite options. Real mattress, toppers or the Lessa type. Looks like all may require shock upgrades. This may be one of my first mods. Great input. Thanks all.

We put a 3" gel foam topper in our previous trailer (a 2018 Reflection) and got by with it but I (a big guy) was feeling the plywood underneath and often felt like I was crawling out of a hole when getting up.. The mattress in our 2018 Solitude was even-junkier than the one in the Reflection so we replaced it two weeks after getting the trailer with a Casper foam mattress. No issues with fit or weight; I have not had to replace the under-bed-storage gas struts as others report they've had to do.

After more than six months sleeping on that we're both still very happy with it.

For those of you choosing to replace your mattress with a foam version (Leesa or Casper), what size of mattress are you purchasing since an RV mattress is usually a queen short I believe?

The queen used by Grand Design is a regular queen not a short. Makes it nice for replacement.

Ours came with a king, we replaced it with a queen Casper and have inches of plywood sticking out beneath it on either side. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to trim that off or leave it for the next owners who may want a king.

As Country Campers has told you the queen beds in these trailers are typically regular queens, 60X80. It's the kings that are odd; instead of 76X80 they are hard-to-find 72X80, which some people replace with "California king" mattresses that are 72X84. People say the extra four inches sticking off the foot of the bed isn't a problem while an extra four inches WIDER with a full-size king would often be a problem. Certainly would be in our trailer model which was plenty tight with the 72X80 king.

It would definitely be a problem in my 315RLTS. The bed is in a Schwintek slide and when closed the bottom of the standard queen bed is lightly touching the dresser. That's why I had to adjust the headboard to ensure the mattress fit flush against the wall.

We tried the gel foam topper and tolerated it for a year but got tired of sleeping in a hole. This is what we replaced it with and have been delighted. We bought the 72 x 80 and put the soft side up (two sides to the mattress, soft and a little firmer). Year number 4 and we still very happy. No shock replacements either on the storage lift either. https://www.mattressinsider.com/luxu...mory-foam.html

                          CloseToRetirement,

I ordered the Luxury mattress and it will be here this week. Thank you for the advice.

Update: The mattress is installed and I'm surprised it is this comfortable for its height. Time will tell but this will certainly be far better that what came with the rig.
