  • Butyl Sealant - When and Where?

The post below was copied from https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...0542#post30542

"Butyl Sealant" is new to me--when and where is it intended to be used? Why not where we use butyl tape (instead of Alpha sealant)?

    Curious minds need to understand...

    TIA!

    ------------------------------------

I was able to make contact with the factory and obtain information on the sealant. Here are photos of the sealant and fittings that are ready for installation after the sealant is applied.

According to the Red Devil website,

"RD Pro® Butyl Architectural Grade Sealant is a high performance sealant that is ideal for below grade applications and outdoor jobs requiring a durable, watertight seal. Cured sealant is mildew resistant."

More information is on the website. Check out the TDS and FAQ pages for detailed information.

Yep. FIrst place I went and looked after you posted, Jim. There are a lot of places on our campers that require "durable, watertight seals". Heck, the whole camper needs them! That's why I'm surprised I've never heard of this sealant before. It's always been "silicone" (or RV Flex).

I'm completely ignorant on this topic, but it appears to me that the connections GD is putting these on are subjected to water pressure. (Not much, but when dumping there is some back pressure.) How much pressure is OK for this sealant and what is too much? The website doesn't specify.

Is this stuff used anywhere else on the camper? If not, why not?

Maybe I should tag Emily. She loves it when I ask questions like this.

I bought my butyl tape from this site. I have also bought other supplies including his crimpers. Very professional result. a lot of his information is applicable to RV repair, specifically 12 volt wiring. Great info here.
