  • Published Length of GD Trailers

Moderator Note: Title of this thread changed from "Fun Fact About Grand Design" to it's current with the permission of gone AWOL to capture the conversation's topic. -Howard

For those that has a interest in how long their units are, be it for legal reasons like in BC Canada with highway length restrictions, or just for curiosity. GD measure and publish length of units from PIN to Rear....so when it says length or overall length it's not really overall, but rather what they identify ass overall. Kinda like a motorcyclist entering a bicycle race, because he identifies as a cyclist.

Example, my Momentum 376THS is according to GD 41'1".....I measured it and low and behold it's 43'.

In British Columbia Canada, we are only legal if we are towing a trailer shorter than 41'. There are some Insurance implications......

Makes me wonder if my trailer is 13'5" high.....

    Now you know.

Hmmmm. I'll have to get out the tape measure. I know when I have the truck hooked up to the trailer and the boat hitched up behind that, I'm under 74.5'. Max allowed RV 'B' train length in Ontario

Some manufactures use the box length on travel trailers, which does not include the tongue. Years ago there was one manufacture that did this with fifth wheels as well which confused a lot of people including my local RV dealer. I guess that I will be measuring mine as well.

I always thought the model number should be the length. As in a 376THS should be 37'6". Seeing as it is actually 43', they should have called it a 430THS in my opinion.....but they didn't ask me...so...lol

It used to be (not sure if it's still accurate) that the three digit model numbers were the square footage of the unit.

I think it's (in my case) 3 axles 76% effort to attain quality....πŸ˜†

Make no mistake, love my 2022 376BHS but oh boy it's been a chore to fix and rectify simple quality issues. I am now of the opinion a RV (of any kind) is more a hobby and project than a mere camping tool. If one approach the purchase with that in mind you'll be happy.

I think the pin box to rear measurement is the unofficial industry standard of length. Kinda hard to measure a rounded cap down to the ground with an extended pin box in the way.

In my view, if the word "overall" is used it should be just that. On most 5th wheel trailers the pin box is set back from the furthest point forward on the nose.
i dropped a plum line from the furthest point on the nose. Made a mark on the ground, level ground with a level 5th wheel. Lot's of room between the line and pin box.
In BC Canada you are actually permitted to have items or body parts sticking past the length without it counting, provided it's for aerodynamics....makes me wonder if the super aerodynamic nose cone is part of this exception??

RVIA seems to be working on standard measurement definitions.

Perhaps a quality standard will eventually enter the equation....oh but that could be the end of RVs.

I actually just found that sticker this weekend. It was on the lower part of the front door. I was a little surprised to see that it says our unit is 45’ 11.5”. Grand Design list it as 44’ 2”

For as long as I can remember it has had a footnote on the specs page that the length is from hitch to rear.
