we have an AirXCel 9630*336 thermostat controlling Coleman Mach 15 with heat pump. Is it normal for both the gas furnace and heat pump to run during initial heat up, when only HEAT ELEC set on thermostat? Once set temp is reached, they will both shut off, and then the Coleman heat strip provides additional heating as set on thermostat.

Seabair@aol.com yes that is normal...If ambient indoor temp is 5 degrees or more cooler than your requested (set) temp, then both the heat pump and gas furnace will run simultaneously to recover the temp to your request. After that, only the heat pump will cycle to maintain temp. Unless the heat pump is unable to keep up, then it gets three strikes you're out, and the gas furnace kicks in again. I recently found an owners manual for a heat pump thermostat on their website.
