  • Convert bed set up from Queen to King

Hi, I feel silly asking this but our 315RLTS currently has a queen set up. How would we make it into a king? Do we have to remove the little side tables that are there? Any other things we have to do other than put the king mattress down and just use it?

I appreciate anyone's response. This is our 1st GD and our first trailer that there's the option to have one or the other. I just don't know the answer so I appreciate your help.

I have not done this, but I have had my bed apart more times than I can count. You would need to remove the night stands, and minimum replace the plywood with a bigger piece to support the bigger mattress. Depending on the mattress (I replaced mine with a memory foam one from Costco but stayed with the queen) you might need to brace the plywood since the supports will be in from the edges now, but I would doubt that would be an issue.

In my experience the Queen mattresses Grand Design uses are residential size queens, but I think the Kings are "RV King" which is shorter, so you may find when you embark on this that a residential King mattress will not fit. You would need to measure to be sure.

ncitro gives good advice... I'll just add a few observations. The bedroom layout in the 315RLTS is almost identical to the layout of our previous Reflection 337RLS fifth wheel. There was little enough space to get around the bed in our Reflection with the queen bed - we couldn't imagine that same space with a king bed in it. We also like having the "night stands" for phones, tissues, etc., and wouldn't want the little shelves protruding over the mattress as they do with the king bed option (this configuration makes the width of the king bed at the head the same as a queen, anyway). We're queen bed people, anyway, so having seen the Solitude 310s with kings in them on the lots, we ordered ours with a queen. Suits us fine and we have LOTS of space in the bedroom!

Thank you both for your quick responses. I think we will try it for awhile with the queen mattress and a topper, and then see if we want to go to a king or just leave it, or just get a different mattress. I think we can manage with the queen as long as it's comfortable. You guys rock!

          You are welcome!

We are King bed people at home, but like Rob, we like being able to get around the bed (mostly). The mattress I got from Costco works great, and we just are a little more cuddly when we are in the camper lol. Worth it for the nightstands for us.

If you use the search function and just look for "mattress," you'll find lots of posts on that topic. In most cases, people are not satisfied with the OEM mattress and a topper in the long run. Many of us just go ahead and replace the mattress altogether. Laura and I are partial to the Tuft & Needle mattresses (we think it's the best mattress either of us have ever slept on - and I have arthritis and a bad back), but others like and use everything from Sleep Number to Casper to Costco's house brand of foam mattresses and are quite happy. Mattresses are very personal and subjective, so you'll find about as many different opinions as people expressing them. The most common theme, though, seems to be people's dissatisfaction with the OEM mattresses.

Might be the most true statement on the internet lol.

Thank you for that. You're right, we most likely will end up replacing it. Now to figure out which one.....

My guess is that at a minimum you will want a complete new mattress. I’ve not spoken with another RV’er who said they are happy with their OEM mattress regardless of make or model. I suppose those folks may be out there somewhere, but I’ve never met one yet. A high quality (read expensive) mattress is worth every penny, in my experience.

I used to sell shoes in a sporting goods store. Shoe mfg's put in an inexpensive insole, rarely a Dr. Scholls. The same is true with RV mfg's, rarely do you get a Dr. Scholl's type quality mattress.

Wall to Wall mattress, (maybe). Has anyone attempted to modify their Queen-sized bedroom space including closets and headboards to accommodate a King sized bed?
(we may find this to be an insurmountable task)

We have ordered an Imagine 2670MK for receipt May 1.
The first(of many) revisions, my wife has requested is to upgrade mattress from Queen (60x80) to King (76x80). We had considered many trailer Mfgs and models. But because of several constraints, we settled on the Imagine 2670MK knowing that the king bed would be a major shortcoming. We also went into this with eyes wide open. I have read all of the previous posts and comments. The lack of space around the mattress and maybe the reduction in closet space are acceptable compromises.

At the very least, would someone be willing to take some measurements to provide some dimensions so I can start formulating a plan?

You'll have a major rebuild on your hands if the bedroom is like the one shown on the website. I'll be interested to see what you end up doing!

Those "end tables" are about 16" wide, so you can do the math from there.

humunuku YazzieGal , the biggest you'll be able to fit is 72 X 80 (RV king). The 72 just fits within the walls of the slide. We showed up with our new replacement mattress the day we picked up our ordered unit, and swapped it during our PDI. OEM one went to the dump. Ours is a Montana Hybrid (no relation to Montana fifth wheel). They are made to order in Arizona; I think it was about $900 including shipping. Comes compressed and vacuum sealed. Ready to sleep on in a few hours of unpacking. It was so good, we ordered a residential sized one for home! They have three different firmness to choose from.
