  • Mounting heavy item on garage wall (or any)

    Hello all,

Cannot find this topic addressed in threads, so pardon me if it is somewhere. Please direct me if so.

I am installing a very large solar system on my 24MPR toy hauler and am at the stage I need to mount my 11.5kg (about 24lb) all-in-one inverter/charger/controller somewhere. The most logical place (not many options) is in the garage, between bunks and rear ramp, on that section of wall. My question is around what's in the wall and where... meaning can I access any meaningful "meat" to mount that unit? Does the wood extend low enough from inside roofline that I can access it through the paneling? And is it 2X4? The mounting is along the top flange of the unit, so it must "hang". Between its weight and the pitching and bouncing down the road, and the fact 3000w, 102v, 75A is fed into it from panels, and another pile from batts, it NEEDS to be solid.

Thanks for any info, pics, direction to those who can advise. One roof repair specialist says hanging it from ceiling joist in that area probably best....

I have not had much luck hanging heavy items from the walls of my garage in my Momentum. I have the holes to prove it. In order to keep from tearing holes in the thin wood wall cover I took the sheet metal covering off the bottom and found the aluminum studs. I then tapped into the studs higher up. Tore those out also.

So I quit hanging stuff on the walls. If I ever do decide to hang something from the walls I will spread the weight out by taking either a piece of sheet metal or plywood 3'x3' and securing it in multiple places, then attach the mounting hooks to it. My thinking is similar to the way snow shoes work, by spreading the weight out it does not apply the same force.

Studs are aluminum. I don't know if you can use a stud finder. I turned my AC to coldest possible on a humid night and the next morning you could clearly see the studs in the condensation. Then just use a tape measure.

globaladv , you might want to consider building (buying0 a free standing cabinet to mount the panel(s) in instead of wall mounting them. This will put the load on the floor instead of the wall. Of course you will want to attach the cabinet to one or two of the wall studs to keep it from tipping over, but this will be a lot less stress on the studs than hanging the panel(s) from them.
