  • Replacing the microwave 2021 297RSTS

Hope you had a very nice Thanksgiving Day.

We are owners of a 2021 297RSTS. Yesterday I tried to remove my
microwave oven to replace it with a combination
microwave/convection oven. I cannot get the microwave out.

    - I removed the screws in the gap between the right and left
ends of the oven and the side walls, the screws that attach the
wood cross member to the top of the slide out.
    - The microwave will not come down.
    - Is the wood cross member glued to the top of the slide out?
    - There are lag bolts coming from above the wood cross member
through the wood cross member into the captive nuts inside the
    top of the microwave.
    - Looking outside at the top of the slideout, I do not see any
screw/bolts. I presume the heads of those lag bolts are in the
    wood cross member.

Please tell me how to remove this microwave oven.

What specific model microwave is in your 297RSTS?

If you pull off the vent cover/trim along the top front of the microwave (held on with plastic tabs) you will see likely several (long) screws driven up into the cabinet/frame. Make sure someone is holding up the m/w when you are removing them (kind of a two-person job)! After that it is only resting on the back mounting plate (bottom rear of m/w) and it can be lifted out.

Of course - this is how mine was installed. YMMV.

When I removed my convection microwave from my 297 RSTS to place the recall heat shield there were a lot of screws in the front under the cover. Some were back a ways and took some work to get to them and out. If I remember correctly there were about 6 wood screws. After they are out it just tilted down to lift out. I didn't have any lag bolts on mine.

No so lucky, That was my favorite youtube, told myself this will be easy.
If I end up crowbaring it out, that is how I will install the replacement.

Here's one removal/installation by GD (probably not your unit): https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...7967#post17967

              Here's how mine came out.

P.S. The video was made during the "Customer Satisfaction Program" . An insulator was added behind the microwave due to some overheating, but as I mention in the video mine didn't need it.

Two good videos but not like mine. No cabinet over it, no screws through the oven into the cabinet.
At 1:08 in your video, when you point at the second screw, behind the screen and above the red wire, one may see the captive square nut, in mine there is a bolt from above 1-1/2 inches through that nut, but there is no overhead space, just the roof of the slideout.
                Thanks,

Can you post some pictures of the microwave installation? Maybe something we can see will trigger another option. Otherwise...no idea. Sorry. Hopefully TucsonJim will see this (another 297RSTS owner).

Lag bolts and captive square nuts.
There is not a cabinet above, only the top of the slide out.

PineconeNW -- reviewing the installation instructions (see attached PDF) it's clear from your image that the bolts are indeed coming in from the top.

So how does that fascia get removed? I have no idea. TucsonJim or another 297 owner -- any ideas?

The wood screws in your first picture is what is holding up the microwave. The bolts shown in the installation manual come down thru the block of wood held up with the wood screws, there also should be a bracket on the bottom attached to the wall. Remove the wood screws while holding the front up then lower the front and lift the back out of the wall bracket, careful these are kinda heavy.

Yes and yes, to back to the original post, removed the screws, will not come down. There is no cabinet above. Bolts do not go through the roof. Cross member must be glued to roof. Saturday I will use a crow bar and break it off.
