  • Hot water heater

When our hot water heater is running on propane the water is too hot. ( almost scalding)
I am unable to locate the temperature gauge to adjust the temperature.
The tank is a Dometic wh 6 gea
Is there even an adjustable temperature gauge if so does anyone know where it is located?
    thanks for your response.

As far as I know there is no adjustment. 140 F is hot.

      Hi Coops,

Ted is correct that the water heater thermostat is not adjustable . . . and, 140F is hot by residential standards. However . . . if the primary thermostat fails, there is a higher temp safety shutdown. It would be worth checking the temperature of your hot water to make sure that you are seeing the 140F and not a higher temperature safety shut off.

This would probably indicate a stuck operating thermostat. The water heater is cycling on the high limit thermostat. These come as a pair when you order them. And the 12vdc one is different than the 120vac one. The thermostats are located behind the black rubber thing labeled "PUSH TO RESET".

In the picture the DC pair is on the right. One is the operating thermostat and the other is the high limit thermostat. The default temp for the Dometic water heaters is 130 degrees for both the 120vac and 12vdc thermostats. This is the part number: 232282 12V 130 degrees.

They do make an adjustable thermostat for the water heater, AT021 - Supco AT021 - AT Series Adjustable Thermostat (supplyhouse.com). I seen this on another owners water heater, or similar one.

x2 on doing a test of the water temperature. Do the test both on electric and propane. (You'll have to turn off the heater between tests and run the water until it runs cold to ensure accuracy. Doesn't matter which source is done first.)

Also, the picture pengle provided is a Suburban heater, not a Dometic. Principles are similar, but it could be confusing looking at your Dometic. A dometic will look like mine as shown below. (The thermal fuse looks like a diode, positioned above the gas valve's air shutter.)

I think Dometic uses the same thermostat circuit for both electric and gas heating. (same as my Atwood). Howard’s wiring diagram seems to confirm this. So . . . max temps will be the same on either source of heating.

original post indicated the water heater was a Dometic. Dometic unlike Suburban uses a single thermostat and limit switch for both electric and gas.
