  • Wire size for 20' run from inverter in front compartment to main panel?

    Newb wiring question for today....

I'm planning to install a Victron Multiplus 12/3000 in the front compartment of my RV. I'll need to run wire from the outside power connector (actually the EMS near that location) to the inverter (actually an AM Solar Smart Phase Selector) and then to the main panel. Both runs are around 20' each way. I was planning on using 6/4 wire for this but in looking at a wire sizing chart, it appears I may need 4/4.

Bonus question - Is SOOW rated wire OK?

    Thoughts?

I think you should re-measure. Couldn't possibly be 20' each way. . . Entire trailer is only 35'.

It's not a straight line. One line starts at the drivers side of the RV then goes over to the passenger side. Then down 2' and under the floor, back up then across front compartment. I haven't pulled a wire to get the exact measurement. Could be 17'. Could be 23'. But 20' is a good estimate.

I'd be shocked (pun intended) if 6/4 would not be fine. Not that I've seen every install out there, but I've seen a bunch and never seen an RV use 4/4. SOOW Should be fine as well, as long as it's not exposed outside (I wouldn't run it in the underbelly either). That's what I ran to and from my inverter as well. It's much more flexible and easier to work with than the factory 6/4.
