  • 5th wheel brake wiring

Lost trailer brakes on 2021 Solitude 310GK. Is there a hidden fuse somewhere on the rig, as we have checked wiring and figure it's either that or a broken connection to the brakes, or???
Set up our F250 SD for towing and brake control is factory.
Brake lights, turn signals, tail lights all good-no connectivity at trailer brakes.
    Help!

The fuse would be in the truck. Under the hood in all probability.

Check the truck connection at the lower right to the lower left when using the truck brake to see if you have power going to the plug , lower right is the trailer brake , lower left is ground. If you have power there then the fuse will be ok. Next follow the cord on the RV up to the pin box and locate the silver box where the cord makes the connections with the RV. Open this box and look for any loose connections , I think it should be the blue wire for the brakes. If this is all good and you have brake power to this point then you may have an issue between this box and the brakes. Have a helper , while connected to the RV , push the brake pedal in the truck and listen at the wheels for a hum sound. If the sound is heard then you have power back to the brakes and the brakes should be working and may be out of adjustment.

Another way to determine if the trailer brakes are being energized is with a magnetic compass. Hold the compass below the center of the wheel hub (which is the location closest to the brake electromagnet) and have someone activate the manual brakes apply in the truck. The compass needle will swing if there is power to the trailer brake. Note: when not moving, the brake pedal in the truck may not activate the trailer brakes.

Larry Munsterman Larry, while it will not tell you if all of the brakes are connected nor will it indicate if there is a wire shorted to ground, you can OHM the brake signal wire to ground. You should be able to access the online manual for the axle and brake assembly to determine the ohms per magnet (wired in parallel). If it's the typical 4 ohm per magnet and 4 magnets you should get 1 ohm (1/4+1/4+1/4+1/4=1/Rt). If you do not get an ohm reading, that may mean that resistance is too high or there is not connectivity between the circuits.

Not recommended for long duration of time (i would limit to 30-45 seconds "ON" time to 5 min off time) you could activate the emergency break away switch and check the magnets as Rob suggested. this will not indicate an issue between the pigtail plug and the junction box, but it will determine if the system functions. Note the FACTORY battery disconnect switch DOES NOT STOP OR PREVENT POWER FROM BEING APPLIED TO THE EMERGENCY BREAK AWAY SWITCH. DO NOT USE THE BATTERY DISCONNECT SWITCH AS A WAY TO STOP POWER TO THE BRAKES. It has been reported that extended brake activation from the Emergency switch may cause heat in the wiring, thus the limit of "ON" time when using the break away switch.

All great advice above, but I've got ask how the OP knows the brakes aren't working and wonder if he tried increasing the gain on his control and used the manual switch first. It may be that he just needs to set his brakes.

Said he lost brakes in the OP. So hopefully he did not change the gain causing the apparent loss of brakes.
