  • Blowing Fuses -- Why?

I keeping blowing the 35amp fuses on the inverter/converter. Do i need to disconnect the power from truck before i use the rv parks electrical source?

    Chris,
Edited the title of this thread to reflect the content. Hope you don't mind. (It's a moderator thing!)

Noted that was your first post, so before I forget please check out the Welcome Letter to New Members at https://gdrvowners.com/forum/main-fo...to-new-members

A converter is the opposite of an inverter. A converter takes 120vAC shore power and changes it to 12vDC. An inverter takes 12vDC and changes it to 120vAC.

If you'll identify the GD trailer you own, and possibly even a picture of the device that blowing the fuse, forum members will be more apt to provide a focused response.

      Hi Chris,

Welcome to our owners technical forum. When you have a chance, have a look at our welcome post. https://gdrvowners.com/forum/main-fo...to-new-members . This will help you set up your signature and navigate the forum.

The 35A fuses are on the converter (battery charger). This device does not have inverter capability (converting 12V battery voltage to 120V house voltage). The fuses on the converter are there to protect against damage from reversed battery connection. First step would be to make sure that your battery is correctly connected . . . you may have positive and negative reversed. There is typically no reason to have to disconnect power from the truck before connecting to campground shore power. Most trucks do this automatically when you turn off the truck, but it is good policy to unplug the connection between truck and trailer, just to be sure.

The only time I have seen the feed converter fuses blow is a reverse polarity battery.
And when that happened, other fuses in equipment like t-stat, stereo etc were also found to be blown. The event I'm describing was on a 'Cruiser' brand trailer but wiring practices are likely similar.

Blowing the two Reverse Polarity Fuses other than connecting the battery reversed seems as if there's something wrong with the converter's circuits or an very large load on the converter is blowing them.

Reading Progressive Dynamics Power Converter patent at: https://patents.justia.com/patent/20080144341 and https://patents.justia.com/patent/20080144341 describe the Reverse Polarity Fuses
I would think the WFCO power converter's work similar as the Progressive Dynamics converters.

I hadn't picked up on the first reading, but PD has a diode blow so PD knows if reverse polarity has occurred, for warranty claim purposes?

Interesting parts are in Output Circuit and Permanent Reverse Battery Indicator sections:

I don't know what kind of camper you have but have you checked the battery. My battery box did not have holes drilled in it when the trailer was delivered and it filled up with water and shorted out the converter.
