  • USB Port in Entertainment Center

So, in the 2400BH we have an AC plug in the entertainment center, but not a USB port. I wanted to add USB for device charging....as well as my camper media server project: https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...x-media-server

I ordered the USB plug from my dealership as a spare part. It has built in protection. I do not recall how much it was....but it was too much $$$. Would love to find the same part online. If anyone knows where to grab it, please let me know. I may do another in the future.

I ordered 100 feet of 14 gauge 2 pin 2 color (black and red) wire from amazon...but the link does not work anymore even under my order page. "Tyumen 100FT 14-Gauge 2pin 2 Color Red Black Cable Hookup Electrical Wire LED Strips Extension Wire 12V/24V DC Cable, 14AWG Flexible Wire Extension Co" was the title on Amazon. I went with this size wire based on the voltage an amperage using charts online.

I ran it down to the DC distribution panel in the entertainment center and installed in it's own spot and the ground to the common ground bar mounted on the floor behind the breaker/fuse panel. To access - I removed the radio/DVD player and already had put a hole in the panel (hidden) for the Touch 50 GX wiring). I tried running the wire down this hole...but it would not go....too flexible. I grabbed some paracord 550 and a handful of washer and used them as weights to pull my rope to the bottom and then pull the wire. I used some new push wire nuts I picked up at Lowe's a long time ago....used 3 and 4 slot ones in case I wanted to add another quickly to this install in the future or something else on this DC circuit at the bottom and taped it up well.

    https://www.lowes.com/pd/IDEAL-In-Su...ctors/50101800

The push in wire connectors were very slick and very solid on the pull test...but I taped them up anyway.

Between the 10 amp fuse on the DC panel and the built in protection from the unit itself...I did not put any inline fuses etc. in.

Here are the before and after shots as well as product shots.

Other than running the wire...pretty easy install.

This might be an option, only live while on shore power. Home Depot, Lowe’s etc.

That's pretty slick....I may have to look into that for my wife's side of the bed (no USB slots).

For this install, I wanted the USB ports to pull from battery without hitting the inverter (AC power). So, I will have to control their on/off by plugging or unplugging. The reason I want it that way is for boondocking....I want as little as possible to hit the inverter. Currently the AC and microwave cannot both be on at the same time.....I think the electric (not propane) water heater and AC will do the same. Will throw me into a low voltage alarm and the Multiplus will shut off briefly. I have no concerns in the other direction even if plugged in....the solar MPPT or the Multiplus charger when plugged in will provide plenty of 12V power.

But, that is a slick option and I bet a lot of people may like it for their install...just change the outlet in the same space. Very nice...thanks for sharing.

howson Howard, For those with wireless charging phones, it could stay in the recessed position.

All the 5v and wireless stuff has be a bit suspect on hidden parasitic draws. All of that stuff will have some form of current draw even when not connected.

Doh...I may have to change out for the higher amperage model! - Scratch that....I may have to add the higher amp model and have 4 USB ports there....

I like the wireless pop up....but I am not sure where I would put it....

I probably should have just purchased 2 of the higher amp model and replaced the first one I installed....but I did pick one up and added it to the install. For those that think that is nuts....the power coming from this plug is material to me for another project and that added amperage will help. I went ahead and ordered some hardware for HDMI and network connections. I had spare Network gear and wall plates....but I wanted the color to match (or at least be close) so I ordered the following:

                (2) wall plates - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DEX620G...roduct_details
                (1) pack of blanks for not used ports - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G8D1WYC...roduct_details
                (1) pack of black RJ45 keystone jacks - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075ZPGV1H...roduct_details
                (1) pack of HDMI female keystone couplers - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07214QPBD...roduct_details

I may run (2) HDMI connections from here to behind the TV. I am thinking about running 1 network - maybe 2 from the entertainment center to the passthrough. Not decided, but I have some options.

That will be great! I have used Keystone connectors for probably 20 years, they are great for flexibility.

I went down the rabbit hole and traced the supplier for the grand design parts, as well as other options, and my install.

I ended up buying and installing (this weekend actually) this:

Thanks Mike - I still haven't added one on the wife's side of the bed. So....I may look to see what my parasitic draw is (if any)...did not notice watts increase on Touch 50 GX.....

Took a pause while working on tank monitoring. HDMI stuff and network stuff is in. I may run a couple network cables while I have it apart for tank monitoring. Updates hopefully soon.

Well this project is now finished!

While I was working on tank monitoring - I went ahead and ran (2) CAT6 STP cables from the passthrough to the Entertainment center (this gives options to hardwire (network) the Cerbo GX. It also let's me move my temporary hotspot to the entertainment center instead of being hooked up in the pass through.

So, in the end here is what was installed:
                            (2) USB ports
                            (2) USB ports with higher amperage
                            (2) network ports
                            (2) HDMI ports

The HDMI goes up to the TV. Both the HDMI and USB is also forward looking to a different project - the PLEX Pi project: https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...x-media-server
