  • Fuse for Main Interior Lighting Keeps Blowing

After a day of travel our fuse for the main interior (rear) lighting was blown. When we tried to replace fuse it blew immediately. Turned off battery connect and was able to replace fuse, but when we turned the battery connect back on we heard the pop of the fuse. The fuse controls the overhead lights in the kitchen / living area, pantry, vanity (not main bathroom lights), reading lights above bed (not main bedroom lights), as well as the lights in the storage bays. All switches that we know are connected to that fuse are turned off. Not sure how to search or locate short without a working fuse.

Remove the switch panel and look at the back of the switches for touching connections or wires. If nothing there you may have to go light by light to see if there is a problem , start with the light closest to the switch as they are more than likely wired in a chain , one light to the next and so on. Make sure there is no power when fiddling with electrics.

Trophawk Welcome to the family and the forum!

As Brian delicately pointed out, searching for this solution may be somewhat tedious. The only shortcut I can suggest is to remove a wire from each switch and install a new fuse. If it doesn't blow, you will have eliminated the "stand alone" lights that have their own switch. Then reconnecting the switches one at a time may tell you where to concentrate your efforts.

You can use a multi-meter to check for shorts using resistance with the power off, fuse removed. First as mention above look for obvious shorts, etc, then starting at the first light or switch disconnect one upstream stream connection (away from fuse) and check across the positive/negative connections. There should be no resistance. If it shows high resistance (meter pegged) then there is a short in that wire run. RE connect everything and then repeat - continue down the line. However I suspect when you pull the lights or switches I think you will find the issue.

You remove the upstream connection to isolate the run you are testing.

Also check the connections at the breaker/fuse box too.
