    I'm in the understanding, as I interpret it from NEC, that if it's 1 outlet, it's a dedicated circuit, therefore the outlet has to match the circuit protection. However, if there are multiple outlets then you can have the lower rated outlets on the 20 amp circuit.

      The real question is what is DMacLeod trying to plug in. Most small appliances draw about 1.5 amps with negligible inrush at start up, so that multiple outlets can be on one breaker. If DMacloeod is looking to provide power to a larger appliance then a new dedicated circuit may be needed, or make sure everything else on that circuit is off.
