  • No LED Awning Lights on 2022 231RK

We just purchased a 2022 Transcend 231RK and there are no LED lights under the awning. There is no switch for it or options available from Grand Design. Has anyone added lights with a nice clean install? I would be interested in links for lights and any install pics you have. Thanks!!

There's a spreadsheet of modifications documented in the Modifications channel. I don't remember a specific modification like your request, but you may find an inspiration.

One that may interest you was done by Steve7 where he replaced the exterior speakers with lights, using the speaker wire for power. (LEDs require very little power.) Documention in this thread: https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...erior-lighting

There are some awnings where the light strip is on the drum . . . meaning that the awning has to be fully out to uncover this light strip. Any chance that you have this configuration?

Recpro has LED strips lights and plastic channel that mounts to the exterior wall with VHB tape. I’ve used these to replace the lights in the awning tube. The wall mounted lights have the advantage of providing light with the awning retracted.

The hardest part is where to find power and mount the light switch. In addition to the option suggested by Howard, one of the existing exterior wall lights like the light over the door is an option. A more involved option is to mount a switch in the panel with the other switches and run wires. To get the new wires to the outside find where the power for the awning goes through the wall - this will be on the right arm of the awning (viewed from the exterior). Extend the awning to find where the wire go through to the interior. In the interior often times the wires are hidden behind a panel or a carpeted box running along a wall. If you are dealing with a carpeted box the retaining screws can be found with some careful and sometimes time consuming feeling for screw heads.

We just picked our 231RK three weeks ago and it came with an LED strip (about 12") mounted on the side of the trailer beneath the awning. It also has a switch on the control panel. It illuminates nicely for access and egress purposes and you won't be blinded by it. I was surprised how effective it is.
