  • Question about generator with 120/240 switch

    Hi all,

I've just completed a break-in run with a Westinghouse 5300DF generator using a Hughesnet Watchdog+EPO to monitor power draw as I varied the load and kept the total draw under ~45% of max rated watts.

Breakin was connected using the built-in 30A 120V TT-30R receptacle with an adapter.

The generator also has an L14-30R receptacle with a 120V/240V switch. I've searched here, and google, youtube, etc., as well as scouring the manual -- I can't find documentation of whether the 240V mode runs outputs 2x 120V split phase or something else.

The manual does indicate that the only way to output the full rated power is by using the L14-30R in 240V mode.

So, Should I run my 50A 310-GKR plugged into the L14-30R via adapter in 120 or 240 off the generator?

    Thanks in advance!

    Matt

Advertising says it will run high voltage devices. I would not select the 240 volts for the rv.
The intuitive control panel features an adjustable 120/240 Volt Selector Switch to draw more power with added flexibility for higher voltage appliances like well pumps.

The only way for 240 is (2) 120v legs. Get the appropriate adapter and it will work for a 50 amp RV. Each leg will be 30 amps instead of 50, but you'll be getting the two legs of 120v.

Edit: Here is the appropriate adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Generator-Ada...51757259&psc=1

I see by the wiring diagram in the manual that the L14-30R outlet is a split 124/240 outlet. A proper adapter would allow connecting it to the 50-amp rv circuit and get 2 22-amp legs.

Okay great - I thought that’s what I was reading but wondered what I might be missing. Thanks all!

I'm not an expert at reading the wiring diagram, hopefully someone else in here will make better sense of it: https://www.manualshelf.com/manual/w...h/page-37.html pg 37. If it will run 120VAC mode and feed the L14-30R you are better off running it that way. Reason is that it will provide the full 44 amps. From experience running 3500Watts on 1 leg, the generator struggled to run the AC and a few other appliances. With the full 44 amps available to either leg this will provide you with the full 5300watts throughout the camper vs 2650 watts per leg.

Again I am not an expert at reading the diagram. I would meter the plug to see if it's doing what I expect vs reading the diagram.

TedS Ted, hate to call you out, but does the diagram make sense to you if it will run on 120VAC and give the full 44 amps. It appear the TT30R is limited by a separate breaker to 30 amps.

Jlawles2 I saw it as either/or not both at the same time. One 30-amp or 2 22-amp split.

TedS Thanks Ted. That's kinda what I was thinking also. Hopefully the OP can test to see if it will output only 120 to the big plug and report back.
