  • Tissue Paper as a second best choice?

Based on the current supply issues (I can't find RV TP anywhere) because of the C19 Virus, what are your experiences/knowledge regarding the effectiveness of standard tissue paper (traditionally used for blowing the nose, etc) as a 2nd choice for RV toilet paper when/if we run out of "regular" RV toilet paper. Seems to me that if the recommended RV toilet paper clings to the level sensors in the black tank as easily as they do, that tissue paper may not be a bad second best choice, however, I don't have any 1st hand experience with using it hence my question. All inputs / experiences appreciated. (FWIW: I empty my tanks and do a black tank flush frequently and I don't put much faith in the accuracy of the level sensors but still want to learn if the tissue paper would be too risky or not) Thank you!

I would not be concerned about it and especially under the most recent surcumbstances. Gather whatever you can for the time being. We have use the household products in the past and have not had an issue with sensors or drainage where I have flushed the tanks thoroughly at home after trips.

Just finished reading a post in the other sandbox. The OP had tried facial tissue when they ran out of TP... found out they don't break down like septic-safe TP does and it clogged up the outlet and valve in the black tank. Suggested alternative: in many other countries they don't put TP down the toilet, anyway. They use a covered trash can with a liner and empty it frequently. Might want to consider this approach of you don't want issues draining your black tank.

gotcha Jim, thanks. Seems that way from my perspective also, and I'll wait to hear from others also. Travel safe!

TP in the black tank is from #2 only , this happens at my house as well , eliminates a lot of TP in the sewage system. Using sufficient water is also a key ingredient in the black tank world. I have also learned , last year , that wipes of any kind are NOT black tank friendly. They really like to hang up in the drain hose ( my daughter used a couple that I did not know about until we were draining the tanks).

We do not use "RV Safe" TP in our rig and never have. We just use lots of water and then make sure to thoroughly flush the holding tank while dumping. I've never had a blockage using this method.

I am the one from the other forum that had kleenex clog my black water tank after only a few days of usage. As far as appropriate products are concerned I have always looked for the "Septic Safe" emblem on the TP that we purchase. It's not marked RV safe. But as TucsonJim says using lots of water is important.

I like SecondChances "other country" option. While not as pleasant as just dropping the paper down the hole it is a workable and BW tank safe option. If we get to that point that is what we will do.

I'll give credit where credit is due, here. The trash can idea came from my wife who lived in Spain for 10 years. Putting TP down the toilet in Spain está prohibido. This is also true in nine other European countries.

Anybody who has been a boater will also know about the "trash can beside the toilet". Marine heads (toilets) use relatively small diameter pipes and pumps. These are easily clogged with paper products. My Dad's boat had a sign that said "Don't put anything into the head . . . unless you have eaten it first" .

I have never had an issue using regular TP as long as I remember to per-charge my tank with Dawn dish soap and use plenty of water when flushing.

Thank you for the variety of responses. I lived in Iceland and Sicily in the mid 70's and have had as many or more different European experiences with toilet systems as the next person. That said, since I live here in the U. S. (thank God) I'll continue to look for experiences from RV'ers here who have used the Nose-Blowing type Tissue in their RV commodes in hopes that I can gather enough experiences to make a final decision.
                          All responses appreciated.

You're hard to convince! By any chance did you miss d2reid in post #8 above reporting that kleenex (which is "NoseBlowing type Tissue") seriously plugged his system? That would convince me not to do use it.

                              Dave,

I can’t offer any real world experience, try a a test yourself to get an idea of how the tissue will degrade in water. I have seen others do this and it is far from a scientific conclusion. Grab a couple of clear plastic containers with lids fill them water drop a Kleenex in one a a couple of squares of your current tp, let them soak a bit and then shake Around and see how they degrade in the water. it may give you an idea if the Kleenex will be more clog prone than the regular tp.
