  • 2250RK Design of HWH appears to block removal of Anode

Hello gang. I was all prepared to move to the next step of my HWH PM / Anode replacement job when I realized that my 1 1/16th socket has no way of fitting over the end of the Anode. It did not occur to me to check that first. Additionally, I’ve realized (unless I’m missing something here) that even if I could loosen the Anode, there is horizontal bar in front of where the Anode would slide out, which appears to make it impossible to replace the Anode and I would think normally does not require the removal of the front half of the HWH, which I’m not experienced enough to attack. Pls see picks. If anyone knows a workaround for this that I may not be seeing, pls advise. Thanks in advance!

It looks like the drain plug in an aluminum tank heater, not an anode rod. I use a 3/8 drive socket, 3/8 to 1/4 adapter, and a swivel to get mine out.

It also looks like a PVC plug. It should be a nylon plug or at least a CPVC one.

Schiefswret Dave in your pictures it looks like the plastic drain plug on my HWH. If it is there is no anode as this type of HWH does not have an anode due to a different tank design. If it is the metal plug with anode I think you will find that once it is loosened and pulled out the anode is small enough to allow enough movement to tilt either above or below the obstruction. That was the case on my old Rockwood HWH anyway.

The plug is plastic because the tank is aluminum. (to avoid galvanic corrosion issues). There is no anode rod as there would be in a steel tank.

Many years ago, I made up an plastic to brass valve adapter that just clears the propane line in front and have not removed the plug since. I used plastic to isolate the brass fitting from the aluminum tank. Some think that this is not necessary (because the pressure relief valve is brass threaded directly into the aluminum) but I went will plastic to be sure.

Hmm... wow, I should have not assumed it was a Suburban. One of these days I’ll do things forward instead of backward. After checking, it’s a Dometic model GC6-AA-10E so I’ll try to find out if that has a replaceable Anode Rod or not. Thanks for your help.

Gotcha. Thanks Rob. Saved me some time. Read this after posting above.

So is there any other PM that I should be aware of in this model?

                  Dave,

The GC6 model used to be manufactured by Atwood. There is no Anode Rod.

Twice a year, I perform the following maintenance:

                  -Drain and flush the tank.
-Check for loose or corroded connections on the wiring and electrical boards
                  -Check for leaks
-Check for insect nests and remove as necessary.
-Check water temperature and replace thermostat if needed.

If you like to have spare parts on hand, I'd recommend a spare drain plug, circuit board and thermostat.

No anode rod. Just a drain plug. I use a wrench (instead of socket) to get it loose. After that you can remove with your fingers and there's enough room to completely remove the drain plug.

Hey Dave, didn't see this earlier
Getting a new truck. Ram 3500 factory order. It's built and awaiting a train ride to GA. Up next will probably be a 337rls but I'm getting ahead of myself.

WOW, you’re not messing around are you? Congratulations! Pls keep us informed as to which GD model you end up with. Are you guys going to register for the GD National Rally 8/31-9/3? We will be back at Mountain View 10/20-10/27 if you can make it. I’ve been tempted with the Ram 2500 Cummins but haven’t caved in yet😀
