  • Schwintek Slide Straining

    Our Imagine has 2 Scheintek slides. The larger slide always seemed to run slow but now the motors are really straining to go in or out. I've lubed it with dry PTFE per the Lippert video but that didn't change anything. Any ideas before I take it to the dealer?

      Assuming that you are level and the motors are synchronized side-to-side, you might be able to narrow this down to the side with the problem by pushing on one side and then the other, in the direction of travel to determine which side has a weak motor or a binding condition and is "helped" by the hand push assistance.

        Rob has given good input (as always) and I have nothing to add to aid resolving your problem. A comment, however, on lubing Schwinteks: Lippert told the moderators at a training session that the video was meant for Class A-type RVs. The "back story" is there was a part that rattled, annoying the driver. The lube stopped the rattle. The Lippert rep told us to not use anything on Schwintek mechanisms. Nothing. Just keep it clean.

          Have you checked the batteries? Low voltage will increase amp draw and can slow things down.....

            Also have you tried re-sinking the motors? Instructions are in the manual.

              The trailer is level and the slide was re-synced. The battery monitor function died so I installed a 3-1/2 digit voltmeter under the control panel, and on shore power I have 13.2 volts while operating the slide. Schwentek says to use CRC Dry PTFE lube on the rails and motor. The rails are done, I need to lube the motors yet but I doubt that's the problem. I'll try pushing on one side of the slide at a time to see if I can find any binding. Thanks for the ideas.

                Again, respectfully, I disagree. (Did you see my earlier post?) There is nothing in the manual about lubricating the rails and motor. https://lci-support-doc.s3.amazonaws...cd-0001769.pdf

                I totally get it--I'm a faceless "internet expert"--and there is that video, right? So please call Lippert on Monday and ask them yourself before spraying down your slide. If I'm wrong don't hesitate to post their response here as I am always willing to learn. Things change...

                  Here is page 159 from our 310GK-R manual regarding Schwintek maintenance. This applies to our bedroom Schwintek In-Wall Slide. Note: LCI video does not show lubing the track, just the parts around the rollers and shaft around the gearing. So I am not sure which is correct.

                  Our manual also has a section on other LCI electric slides (for the S-Class models) which do not seem to apply in our unit. This section states "lubrication is NOT necessary". So I think the OP should verify the slide type as suggested above.

                    Thank you! That's very surprising to me, to say the least.

                    GDRV-Megan -- see the reference in post 9 from the 310's manual. GD's guidance conflicts with what the moderators were told by Lippert at the training session. To my knowledge it is not in the Lippert manual. Can you please specify what GD is referencing by "...apply lube...to the upper and lower tracks..."?

                      Although your voltmeter may say that you have 13.2 volts while on shore power this may be misleading. Check the voltage at the battery when not connected to shore power. The slide motors , the schwintek especially , I have found to be a little finicky with the 12 volt system. The reading you are getting is most likely information from the converter as well as the battery. If the battery is not at full charge , or close to it , these slides do not respond very well even on shore power. I have noticed this with our unit and try to keep the battery at full charge.

                        Brian makes an excellent point. In addition, once the slide starts to move the battery will be under "load". It is critical to measure the voltage of the battery while it is under load to see if there's a problem. You should see some drop in voltage, but nothing dramatic. According to Lippert's Service Manual, the controller won't fault until it senses voltage below 8V at the start of the cycle. (Page 11, Error Code chart. It's the manual I linked a few posts up.)

                        Finally, from a technical document that I don't know if I'm allowed to post--so I'll just quote a short section:

                        Low Voltage
                        IN-WALL® SLIDE-OUT TROUBLESHOOTING AND COMPONENT REPLACEMENT
                        The Slide-out Controller is capable of operating the room with as little as 8 volts. But at these lower voltages the amperage requirement is greater. Check voltage at the controller. If voltage is lower than 11 volts, it is recommended that the battery be placed on a charger until it is fully charged. It may be possible to "jump" the unit battery temporarily to extend or retract the room. Consult the unit manufacturer's owner's manual on the procedure for "jumping" or charging the battery.


                        Another option for running the slide on battery only (no converter power) is by turning off the converter at the circuit breaker panel. That's *assuming* there's a separate breaker on your trailer like there is on mine.

                          Our kitchen schwintek slide started moving slower and making new creaking noises. Not knowing that we weren't supposed to, we lubed with CRC as shown in the LCI video and it solved our problem. So not sure what to do next time.

                              Mbopp has posted the correct method for lubrication, where the bearing blocks and gib as illustrated in the video are all that needs to be lubricated. If folks are trying lube the motors, this will cause them to fail. The motors incorporate a hall affect encoder that counts edges where once synchronized, the edges are counted at each motor by the controller to keep both sides in sync. If the slide is out of sync its easy to see from the inside of the rig where one side will begin to move before the other. Another way to diagnose the encoder in the motors is to use the override function from fully open or closed positions where full power is fed to both motors at the same time and the encoders are ignored. There are instructions in the manual in how to do this. Check battery voltage as Brian has stated and if good, run the slide with the battery switch turned on and with the rig plugged into AC.

                              If there is no binding, the voltage levels should be checked first.
