  • Lost Wheel on Memorial Day

We purchased a 2019 Grand Design 2970 RL from Colton RV N Tonawanda, NY last year. We only took 4 local trips. We just dewinterized and our first long drive in the unit. We are now stuck in Greensboro because our wheel fell off on the highway while driving 60mph. This could have been life threatening...but fortunately we were able to get off on a local exit. Colton is closed, Grand Design is closed and we are stuck 600 miles from home. Our unit is at a Camping World and we need help with what is clearly a warranty/defect issue. We asked our dealer if the unit was up to date on the Dexter recalls and they claim it is but I’m skeptical. Help/suggestions/ideas?

There's a "Grand Design RV Emergency Alliance" Facebook group--are you on Facebook? If there's someone nearby or knowledgeable of that area they may be able to help.

Two questions: 1) are you mechanically inclined and, 2) were the spindle and hub ruined or did the castellated nut just come off? If you have the skills and if the spindle and hub are OK, most auto supply stores are open today. You can get replacement bearings, seals, grease, a castellated nut, and some grease and put things back together yourself. Otherwise, the resource that howson listed above is a good one. Also, do you have roadside assistance on your auto insurance and, if so, what does it cover?

If you could get us a pic of the wheel and hub we may be able to help you thru this.
Also I am not up to date on any Dexter recalls , I did not know that they had any.

In the interest of getting back on the road and getting to your destination, if Camping World cannot get it done today, and you are not comfortable making the repair yourself, that should not be an RV specific issue (body work notwithstanding). Any trailer shop, or even a heavy truck shop should be able to rebuild the hub.

Are you at the Camping World at 8615 Triad Dr, Colfax NC?

If so, we can try to locate a mobile RV repair tech near you. If not, let us know the address where you're broke down and we can try to round someone up for you. You would have to pay for the service call and repair, and then contact GDRV customer service tomorrow morning at 574-825-9679 to see if they would reimburse you for the expense. Or you can wait until GDRV customer service opens tomorrow morning before having the repair done to verify whether it's covered by warranty or not.

                Brian,

Dexter did have a recall a year or two ago on 3500 & 4400 lb axles where some axles did not have a bearing race installed. I remember being surprised that some folks drove like this for a while before the hub failed. There is also another recall on this link where some axles did not have sufficient grease.
