My 21 - 25G has a GVWR of 11,5000 lb. The new 25G is 13,000 lb.
Anybody know what they changed to get the extra 1500 lb capacity?
I have a 2021 Momentum 21G. Mine has a GVWR of 9995#. The new 21G has a GVWR of 11000#. I'm not sure anything really changed. It's a numbers game to stay within legal limits.
For example, my 21G has dual 5200# axles. Tongue weight on website shows 920#. That would assume a GVWR of 11320# based on axles, yet GVWR was 9995#.
I know Texas laws state that a tow vehicle with a GCVWR over 26000# requires a commercial license UNLESS the trailer GVWR is under 10,000#. So the 2021 21G will not require a special license in Texas.....but the new 12G will require a special license.
It's the same reason 3/4 ton truck GVWR was never over 10.000#. Legal reasons.
If anybody knows if there have been changes to frames of the Momentum series please speak up. I'd love to know.
I know it's a numbers game, but with two 6000 lb axles, wouldn't it limit the GVWR to 12000 lb?
Yes, 12,000# on the trailer axles. but some of the weight is carried by the drive axle of the tow vehicle (tongue weight) while towing and the tongue jack when detached from tow vehicle.
If you calculate tongue weight to be 10% of total trailer weight of 12,000#, that would be 13,200# GVWR - assuming 10% of that weight is carried by the tongue jack/tow vehicle.
Now where did that extra 1500 lbs of capacity come from?
Are they saying load capacity of the 2022 - 25G is 5100 lbs and my 2021 - 25G is 3600 lbs.
If so, what changed?

Great question. If you end up calling GD Customer Service to get an "official" answer, please share with us what they tell you.
