  • Stainless Steel hardware sources

Fastenall used to be my go to place, but thier prices have gone through the roof. For my coroplast project I need SS 1/4" fender washers (1.5"dia) and a selection of 1/4 x 20 bolts and nuts - all SS. Theirs Amazon, but I have had quality issues. I just ran across Bolt Depot https://www.boltdepot.com good reviews and seem to have everything I need including 1/4" by 20 SS all thread rod for some center supports for the insulation and coroplast. Anyone use them? Any other sources. Looking for packages of 25 or so if possible.

    Thanks
    Keith
On edit I also found www.mcmaster.com with reasonable pricing too.

I used these, only 1 1/4 though, good enough for securing plastic cardboard.

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I never found fastenal to have reasonable prices, I prefer McMaster.

You made me think - 1.25 should be good.

          Another question?

For securing the coroplast I am going to us 1/4x20 by 3/4" long bolts (1/2" might work). Same for attaching the coroplast to the angle iron cross member flange being used to section the install. All holes will be drilled and tapped, including along the frame. I plan to use blue locktite during the install. So folks know I had the entire frame sub-framed with 2x2 channel, so I will need new holes. I am not a fan of the OEM self drilling/tapping hex head screws that Grand design used. They are about 1/4" dia and were galvanized and rusting. They strip and snap easily too if you need to remove and replace.

One question is the size bolt I should use to secure the angle iron to the frame on each end. I think I might need to step up to 5/16" or 3/8" for strength to hold the angle iron in place. Again I would drill and tap those holes. This bolt would be going into the 1/8" wall 2x2 tube. Angle iron would be 1/8" thick too.

Now Tractor Supply has the bolts in grade 5 (could be grade 2) and grade 8, (sold by weight) but not stainless in bulk. Grade 8 goes for about $7 a lb which I don't think is too bad. The grade 8 are gold looking in color, but don't know what coating that is.They may have the fender washers too. So I am rethinking _do I really need stainless, especially if using blue lock-tight on the threads?

OK now let me have it for changing my mind I keep kicking myself for not securing my parts box correctly on my Alaska trip as I had just about everything I need for this project.

Just my opinion.....after years of rust and rusty hardware, when replacing hardware I always use stainless. From what I understand, stainless grade 304 offers the great corrosion resistance due to the high chromium content.

Yoda, IMHO you would be wasting money on grade 8. I doubt you will be using them to their capacity. The Loctite will give some thread corrosion protection. The gold color is yellow zinc plating.

If you are drilling and tapping into steel and using stainless hardware remember the steel you are tapping into, those small threads will rust as well as a steel bolt.

I would go with the zinc plated and not worry about it.

I was just saying what Tractor Supply has in the bulk bins sold by the lb. I know I don't want grade 2 Thanks for the information on the plating. Is that better than the typical silver colored zinc? Any thought on the bolt sizing for holding the cross members in place?

                  Thanks for the help

I had never thought of that. I wonder if I should foam fill the 2x2 channel as I go for interior rust protection.

                    Thanks for your thoughts

I don't think one zinc plating is better than the other. The 1/4 inch will work. If there is not much difference in price, I'd upsize to 5/16. But that's just me, go larger if $ r =.

Here is a good description of Zinc plating, What Are The Different Types Of Zinc Plating? | Dorsetware Ltd

We have used most of these types in some of our manufacturing parts for different customers in different applications.

As far as foaming the tube, I would not do that as the foam will hold moisture. Paining inside the tube would be helpful if you can do it.

Anti-seize compound will allow you to use a much less expensive bolt and will never rust in place with a quality compound.

                            Good thought, but which one?

I was also going to use blue loctite on the bolts so they don't vibrate out. I guess I could use lock washers.

                              Keith,

For your project, I would use copper which will weather better than aluminum. There is no vibration on the coroplast bolts so I would not worry about that. You could install a lock washer on top of your body washers but with no vibration, I believe you will be fine without doing that.

For stainless bolts use aluminum but there is no need to spend so much.
