    Rv gps

    The NUVI2639 we have been using since our Yellowstone trip in 2013 is starting to have issues. Randomly turning off, locking up etc..So I thought before we left for AZ we should buy an RV GPS to replace it. I'm partial to Garmin GPS's. Was looking at the 890, 795, 780, 660.... Then found out 890 is discontinued. 1090's are a bit too pricey. Not sure if 10" screen is too big anyway.
    We've never had an RV GPS before. Anybody have a recommendation?

    I've only used Garmin, too. I have a Zumo 660 (old!) for my Goldwing and a RV770 for the RV. While (way) less than perfect, I use Basecamp extensively to plan trips. I like that Garmin comes with lifetime maps, too, if you get the "LM" version of a particular GPS.

    I haven't done in-depth comparisons on the new GPS' available, but I do know TechnoRV has a sale (and better price than Amazon) on the 890. https://technorv.com/collections/bes.../garmin-rv-890

      I replaced a Magellan with a Garmin 770. I prefer the Garmin. The Magellan could be easily confused just by driving a 360 circle around a fuel stop. The Garmin responds faster and accurately to off-route direction changes. It saved me several times to recover from wrong turns I made.

        I don't care for RV gps units, I buy the standard Garmin auto gps and and add custom POI's (points of interest) from POI Factory http://www.poi-factory.com/

          I have been looking at them, but haven't purchased yet. I agree that the 10" model is just too big for the dash/front window space.

          A nice feature (IMO) with the 890/895 (and 1090/95) is they have a magnetic screen mount. Very easy to remove and store away, or for the navigator to pull off the mount and search/update, etc.

          Last I looked there were still some 890's available on Amazon Canada.

            I have the built in GPS in my truck, Are there benefits to having a RV GPS such as the 890?

            Not that I need another gadget but we are getting to travel a few more different places and if the benefit is there this may be something that I would get.

              I have a built in GPS in my truck as well. And in my wifes Subaru. They are about 25% as good as a Garmin. Don't have a Chevy so can't say if theirs is any good, but Ford, Dodge, and Subaru factory offerings are crap..in my humble opinion.

                major problem i have had (recurring) is that built ins do not allow change while in motion. now pick your best bet portable.

                      Yes you need to buy another gadget Keith...wait, I mean Brian...Need to work on spending your money as well....lol

                          The biggest advantage is that they usually have height restrictions built into them. IE if you tell it your maximum height of your rig, and it will calculate routes that do not go under it.

                          They also have weight restrictions, which could be important on some of the secondary roads.

                          Less important, but nice is the campground POI's.

                          The Garmin 780 https://amzn.to/3XwGY5Y also reports sharp turns, steep grades, and other road hazards.

                          I don't have one, but I am considering one.

                            Just wanted to add this to this thread. Changing Lanes does a comparison on 2 different GPS units, Garmin 890 and the Rand McNally, Chad also shares a couple tricks for the Garmin. Being as we are frozen here in Pa I have been doing research on the our new GPS unit and dreaming of trips to come.
