  • Impact Wrench Torque Question

How much torque do I need for my RV application?

I burned the brushes on my old impact wrench and decided it was time to buy a new one. I can go with a corded one as I have a generator, but if I go cordless I want to either get the Walmart Tough or a Dewalt as I already have 20V chargers and batteries for those systems and don't want to add another charging station.

    Dallas,
The only item I can think of for a monster impact gun is the wheel nuts. I have the DeWalt 1/2" cordless impact and it's a beast, but heavy. When I'm home I'll break it out when a tire comes off.

For the road I carry a long 1/2" breaker bar for emergency tire changes and I also carry the applicable 1/2" torque wrench for the wheel nuts.

Installing wheel lug nuts with an impact wrench is generally not recommended. Too much error. It would be OK for nut loosening and removal. On the road, hand tools are reliable and always work.

I have a massive 18V cordless that is yet to travel with me, but I agree with Ted that hand tools are more reliable. I have an old fashioned 4 way for breaking the bolts loose, then with the adapter and a socket I can zip them off (if you are good with a 4 way, why bother).

The typical 1/4" insert bit driver and a decent 3/8" drill will work wonders for about 90% of what you may need on the road. I have driven self tapping screws by hand (NOT FUN) to stop a window leak in the previous rolling nightmare (NON GD UNIT).

I too have a massive 18V red one 1500 ft/lbs -- reminds me of cold beer..Its heavy but makes removal easy. However be careful installing lug nuts as it is capable of 1400 ft lbs. It does hav power settings, but even on low I could easily over tighten. So I use it to just snug up then use my HF torque wrench to finish. It does make changing a tire a breeze though

I have the DeWalt 20v, mainly because it uses the same batteries. I carry it on the road, only for removing as suggested. It's also handy for suspension bolts off there's a problem there, or also for helping people on the road with hitch adjustments. I could definitely get by without it, but I've been glad to have it a few times. The truck is more of an issue than the trailer. I had to break one of those loose once and good lord they're at like 165 ft-lbs.

I have the 20v Dewalt. It moves between my box in the truck and patrol car. I do over 30 miles a day on I95 and makes stopping to change a tire much quicker. I carry a HD 4-way and a 4-ft cheater in the Solitude.
