  • Yoda needs a new tool! 1/4" hex powered screw driver

Well I started on the shelving project after getting the rails and clips and reached for my trusty Hitachi DB 3DL screw driver, only to have issues with the switch and clutch. This is the one tool I always carry in the trailer and I have had it I think since the late 80's- 90's when the lithium battery fad first came out. It's very handy in tight spots and made minor repairs a breeze. It was also a drill for small sized holes. I think I can muddle through the project with it, but I sure need something new.

It is 2 speed 0-200 and 0-600 (not variable speed) and always did an OK job. It can be used straight or angled. The slow speed had plenty of power for typical screws and high speed worked OK for 1/4" drill or less. The 1/4 hex chuck is getting a bit sloppy and the battery's are also showing thier age.

Hitachi no longer exists and is now branded Metabo from what I can find. The equivalent is the Metabo HPT DB3DL2 https://www.metabo-hpt.com/power-too...ver-metabo-hpt Its almost identical but reviews are mixed depending where you look - especially switch issue's. Now made in China instead of Japan.

    Other choices I found
    https://www.dewalt.com/product/dcf68...ttery-kit?tid= single speed
https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Produc...tening/2101-22 I had hopes when I found this, until I read the reviews
Then there is the Ryobi, Wen, Freeman https://www.homedepot.com/b/Tools-Po...screw%20driver
And then Amazon - wont list all of them. Many look like re-brands of each other

    Then I found this
    https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/DF012DSE

I have a lot of other Makita tools and all work well. This has twice the power of my old Hitachi, but is the same size and features - even a bit smaller possibly.

So does anyone have experience with any of the brands listed - especially the Makita?

Thanks for any help spending my funds

PS Makita does make a variable speed version. but without the 2 speed range or clutch system https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/TD022DSE I dont thing it fits what I need.

I have the Makita version. It works well. (Disclaimer: All my battery tools are Makita . . . I don’t even look at anything else anymore). My only “complaint” about the power screwdriver being discussed is that the battery is built in and there is no “state of charge” indicator. Unusual for Makita . . .

Edit: I now see that the newer version that you linked has a removable battery . . . Obviously an improvement to the one that I have had for years.

X2! Might require an extra cold beverage to keep the motivation engaged, though!

LOL - left handed too multipurpose. Lots of uses they were never intended for

Getting tougher to use as I get older. Hand and wrist strength are not what they used to be. I have a full Craftsman set too.

            Keith,
I’ve had my Hitatchi drill for 30 years and has been a workhorse. Had one previously that I replaced with this one. I may just go to Harbor Freight and buy a backup and use my Hitachi until it dies. That doesn’t address having multiple charging/battery setup, so I may just get a Metabo and use that battery in the old drill. I bought my Son-in-law a Metabo setup and I believe the 18V batteries still fit the Hitachi charger/drill. I’ll confirm this and report back (I thought I checked this when I bought it but that was 3 years ago, not sure).

Hey Keith - That DeWalt you linked to is a variable speed, not a single speed. 0-430 rpm. I'm a fan of DeWalt tools.

I discovered that Makita is dropping this tool line (AKA 7.2V) which explains some of the pricing I am seeing and availability. I talked to Makita customer service and learned that. The person I talked with was very nice. When I heard the line was being discontinued I asked if there was a new model cumming out. Answer is the next line up 12V but larger compact traditional drill/driver.

Home Depot and Amazon have it for $150ish while others at $200+ I don't think I need variable speed as the Hitachi does not have it - just two speeds so I am used to that. If I have been reading the various specifications correctly the Makita has the highest torque value and is somewhat more compact. Controls are very similar too.

I have been reading reviews on various wood working sites, and they all will work for the typical small tasks. With 10 screws per rail I have a lot of screws to place,

. TucsonJim I need the second higher speed setting for drilling. For the cabinet repair I am drilling pilot holes first with a dab of glue (Tightbond waterproof) inserted using a syringe in the hole to act as a thread locker..

My next step is to see if I can get my hands on the various brands. I have Home Depot, True value and Ace here and in Farmington Lowe's and several wood working supply stores. The stores in Farmington seem to stock more and have a better selection.

Meanwhile I will nurse my Hitachi along and keep an eye out for sales.

Thanks for all of the help folks
