    Update
This is the one I got with the variable heat setting. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1
Was real easy to use and did an excellent job. Comes with several tips too for other projects.

I ended up going with this one:

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Although, as some point out - a lighter will work...but the spaces you are using may not always be conducive to using a lighter....can also be used to thaw frozen pipes.

So, last night in a moment of laziness I used a lighter on a connection I was working on for tank monitoring: https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...nitoring/page5 It blackened the connector.....something you never want to see on an electrical connection, component, or wire.....I won't be doing that again....lesson learned.

Been the done that - at least you do not have flame like I had However I will admit to having a Binford 30,000 flame. aka map gas out of a benzomatic.

Folks have mentioned butane lighters and torches which are not very satisfactory. I use a lot of shrink tubing and for many years have used a butane powered hot air Ultra Torch made by Master Appliance for virtually all of my needs. There are other, less expensive units like the Iroda MJ-950 sold by Amazon that should work fine.

Even in my shop I use the butane unit over the commercial grade AC powered heat gun that I have. It provides a more concentrated heat that is much easier to control than a conventional heat gun so you only heat what you want and not everything else around. It provides more than enough heat for even low temp solder butt connectors and is totally portable.

That looks like an awesome tool--thanks for posting. For the curious, I think this is what the PappaJohn is referencing: https://www.masterappliance.com/ultr...ron-heat-tool/

That’s it. I have used it many hundreds of times over the 20 years that I have had it. It is a commercial quality unit but ones like the other one I mentioned should work fine and are less than half the price.

I've had one of these https://www.amazon.com/ECG-J-300-Mic...7776502&sr=8-5 picked up at the local Fry's many many moons ago. It's done a lot of things from soldering connections, heat shrink, and various other task. The only issue I've had over the years is when it gets too hot it will not self light, but that's what the BBQ lighter is for.

Yoda Keith, Forum is a great way for someone else to help you spend your money. I have less tools than one of my much younger co workers, but seem to do work much faster and easier than he does. He will order a tool and wait a week while watching 100's of youtube videos of how to do the job and ordering more tools.

He's also one of those guys that thinks only OEM parts are the best and thinks anyone who does not go back to the dealer to buy parts is an idiot. We won't discuss how much money he spends doing "maintenance" to change working non OEM parts on a used vehicle.

Your friend is mostly correct where he may or may not have seen the millions of dollars that goes into OEM components, design and engineering. The way to look at this is if you like your truck exactly the way it drove and rode when new, then its best to use OEM components. Since cost is also a factor in producing a vehicle, the aftermarket will offer some pretty high end components where the customer has to sort out whether they will improve the vehicle or is just hype.
Tuners for example are hype if a person cares about longivity. Suspension components can be better such as fully adjustable shocks at over $3000 each but most will never do this as another example.

I frequently utilize heat guns, primarily to apply heat-shrink tubing and bend PVC tubing and pipe. If you need a changeable temperature output, SEEKONE is a suitable choice. With a temperature range of 120 to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be used in almost any application.
