  • Water pump for off grid camping

For those of you who have filled up your water tank with containers....it can get old....I am looking for a powered water pump that will make the task faster / easier. Not sure if I prefer 12V or 120V.....I think I have an outlet on the camper nearby and the inverter can power the pump no problem. I would prefer it hook up to a garden hose type of connection so my existing fresh water hoses could be used....not a deal breaker....but less stuff/hoses to carry.

I have seen drill pumps....but do any of you have suggestions on a 120V small CHEAP water pump?

Here is a drill pump I have been looking at....but again, I think I prefer to just plug it in.

Looking forward to seeing what you all use / suggest!

I made one up. While the pump that came with my trailer may not be the best possible, I figured it would be good to have the same one on hand as a spare for simple swap out if needed. So I bought a case from Harbor Freight, the pump to match the one in my trailer and some hose and fittings. I also have a 120v to 12v converter I store in the case cause since I was lazy and didn't want mount a 12v connector by my Nautilus and it does have a 120v outlet.

I use a vinyl hose to put into the collapsible container and attach to the inlet and a short stainless hose on the outlet to attach to the nautilus. Click image for larger version

I had to fill fresh water from 5 gallon water cubes this weekend. Yes it is a pain but not terrible. With that said, I am going to get a 12v RV water pump similar to my current pump and set that up in the pass through to transfer from the cubes and into the fresh water tank through the fresh water fill. Then as trkester said I'll have an extra should the primary pump ever fail.

Now why didn't I think of this? Awesome, Terry! I'm going to copy your post to it's own thread in the Reference Material section. Too good of an idea to get buried in this thread.

bellis Just a wild thought, however here it is. It would seem that the addition of a couple valves, a "T"or two, an extension for the winterizing intake and a hose connector might allow the existing water pump to provide the service you want. By switching the valves around, set up sort of like the water heater by-pass, plumbed in between the tank and water tank, before the check valve, the pump could maybe be used the same as when winterizing. Just a thought, haven't put a pencil to it though. A question though, what type water source would you be using that needs a pump to fill your fresh water tank? Jugs, 5 gallon bucket?

                Jason,

Thanks so much. I will pick one of this up asap. I'll install a 12V accessory plug in the pass-through and fill through the hose connection.

The pump I use is the one that matches what was in my coach.

The case from Harbor Freight was the Large Apache if I recall. Medium might work depending on your pump. I like having the extra space for my 120-12v converter and 10' of stainless hose that I keep in the case as well.

Oops. Forgot another answer. I've used it 2-3 times now and done 40 gallons each time. 4-5 gallon collapsible containers, 2 times each fill-up.

Mine worked great. I pumped 100 gallons of fresh water from 60 gallon barrels to the fresh water inlet. I felt like the pump on the coach was working too hard due to the distance, even though they were in the bed of the truck. I've since corrupted it and it is only for transferring dirty water now. I will be ordering another for the same purpose. but will keep this one clean.

I am definitely "stealing" this idea! I carry the original OEM pump as a backup, so your idea makes it functional. Thanks again for posting the info.

I have a 20 gallon water tank I picked up off Craigslist. It's mounted on a raised platform and strapped in the truck bed. After I fill it I can gravity feed the water into the side fill port on our Imagine.
