  • NEED storage cover recommendation - NEW FIRST TIME OWNER

New first time owners. Bought this thing 5 days ago. Have to store outside in parking lot because of lack of covered storage. NEED a BEST cover for this thing. NOT worried about PRICE!! (protecting new 60+ thousand dollar rig) FITMENT and PROTECTION top prioroities (UV and Bird poop and orange dust and limestone saturated air).
GD Recommendation form must be a joke (no response x 2 x 5 days).
Any recommendations from any experienced and knowledgeable humans out there, please?

Also, some a-hole said this was fun, when does that part start?

You know what BOAT stands for? Break Out Another Thousand. Hopefilly RV doesn't = Ridiculous Venture

    Regards,
Bo & Jo (Just a couple of old folks trying to live 'til we die)

Congratulations on the new rig! I know a few here use covers but my understanding (I store inside) is they generally do more harm than good due to not an exact fit and wearing against the trailer. If money was no object I'd be going to a canvas company and have them come out and measure for a custom fit. I did this on boats a number of times and was much more happy with the results than anything on the shelf.

We had a cover for our travel trailer back in the late 2000's. I abandoned it after 1 yr. It didnt really keep out all the rain and it was heavy enough where it was a task to get it on and off especially if it had some snow on it.
For me, the juice wasnt worth the squeeze.

Thought of the friction and constant movement aspect also. Thought of the weight issue too as well as the height challenge (my wife only 5' 5", I am 6' 6") and getting too decrepit to be jumping off falling ladders. With the comments and common sense, I suppose the 18 year warranty on the roof and materials takes into account constant exposure to the elements. Perhaps a covered storage will become available before I croak, or it does. Was made in March 2022. I am an engineer so I am OCD anyhow. I'll be keeping a close eye on degradation.

Type the following into your favorite search engine (Google, DuckDuckGo, etc):

          cover MidwestCamper site:gdrvowners.com

The resulting list will be threads with Guest 's recommendation. He has a lot of experience with a good quality cover (though it's pricey!).

Don't Croak! LOL. We used a Sunbrella cover from Calmark Cover Company which was custom made so it fit tight and did not abrade the rig. It was not cheap but nothing worth buying is I suppose. We used the cover for 6 Michigan winters with no issues. The cover for a 2600RB is 50 lbs so its not light but that's what young family is for. Is easy to roll up and toss off the roof however. I used swimming pool storage pillows under the cover on the roof to prevent puddling and this worked exceptionally well to prevent issues with rot. Also, welcome to the OCD Engineers club.

I owned my prior 5th wheel for 18 years and only had the cover on a portion of the time maybe 3-4 years out of 18. The rest of the time it was uncovered because it just wasn't easy. Covers are too heavy (particularly the expensive one I bought last,) the height of the 5th wheel required you to be up on the roof, the cover tear, etc. The trailer was in direct sun and heat for all of its life - Sacramento, Las Vegas, Eastern WA, and finally Central Oregon. When I sold it, the roof material looked fine and had never leaked. I washed the roof maybe once every 2 years. Sometimes longer in between. I'll admit the fiberglass sidewalls got pretty chalky, but that's only because I didn't wash and wax it at all during the last 6 years. Even then, when I made a short-lived effort to clean it up before selling, it cleaned up pretty well.

I have no intentions of covering the new 5th wheel. I think I'd have done much better to be more diligent about washing and waxing - even once a year would have been vast improvement.

Maybe try a relatively inexpensive cover first and see if you can keep up the routine of uncovering and covering every time you use it. If you do, maybe step up to something nicer when the first one rips. If you don't, then it's an inexpensive experiment.

I've spent WAY more on my RV than I ever did on the boats I owned. Good luck!

I think regular waxing with a quality wax and roof inspections will be a better plan, but if you go with a cover, make sure it fits TIGHT! No flapping, billowing, or movement of any kind.

I have seen a fair number of RV covers with grey duct tape on the corners......

In the elements that involve snow and rain, a cover will protect your investment over the winter months when a roof inspection is rarely possible. We used the cover only in the off season months where unless someone is young, healthy and energetic, I would not recommend a cover for the active camping season. However, nothing protects from ultraviolet damage better than covering the rig with whatever is used in that process.

We have always kept our travel trailer covered during winter storage and always felt that it looked "newer" than RV's of a similar age. No doubt they are a pain to get on and off. Last fall was our first time with a 5th wheel cover and that was a whole new level of exciting. Both covers we have purchased were from ADCO https://www.adcoprod.com/index.php?r...tegory&path=20 and we have been happy with the quality and durability.
