  • 125 PSI compressor for Cooper LRG tires on 378MBS - what do you use?

With the new tires needing 125 PSI and my small 2 gallon compressor not being able to inflate these I have been looking for a compressor to do this on the road and at home. It seems that unless I go big or to a 12V portable unit off of Amazon this is going to be a problem. Some that I have seen on Amazon have a max pressure of 150PSI and 12v which would be good but I am skeptical about 12v portable compressors. Some bad experience a number of years ago.

So what is everyone else using to inflate these tires? Any recommendations?

    Thanks,
    Rob

I got the Porter Cable when I had to air my Sailuns. It goes to 150 psi. It stays home. Click image for larger version

I use the Porter Cable compressor also. I believe Cate&Rob uses a Viair portable. The Viair 300P SXS will deliver up to 150 PSI.

Calbar -- perhaps my thought process may help? My criteria, search, and final result documented in two separate threads here: https://gdrvowners.com/towing-and-hi...ard-air-system and https://gdrvowners.com/forum/operati...uty-ada-system

Rob's system is also mentioned in the first thread.

Calbar I have the pancake shown above, but in the truck I installed a Viair 150psi onboard unit above my running boards with the connection next to the rear license plate. They make a 200 psi version as well, if my tires were 125 I'd probably get that.

I have a small hot dog craftsman oil style pump compressor max psi 135 that i picked up for $99 several years back. it fits nicely in the basement of the 5er.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/PORTER-CABL...essor/50015924 if you can find one max pressure 135, lightweight.

I also bought one of these several years back while working out of town to keep the tires up on the truck in the winter (had something in both fronts) https://www.campbellhausfeld.com/hom...ategory_id=309. you could bring up to whatever pressure you have, then top off with the portable inflator. I will admit, it's not fast, but it ran for about 1 hr every other week (30 min per tire) to keep them up. Went from 30 psi to 65 psi. You could also use it to air up one of those 2.5 gallon portable tanks to say 140 or 150 psi then use that to top off the tires. refill the tank as needed.

Calbar if you're into on board compressors, look at Air Zenith, ARB, or Viair. Air Zenith compressors push 4.25 CFM up to 200psi, ARB single is 2.34CFM and double is 4.68CFM. Viair has a bunch of different options from on board to protable.

If you don't want to go portable, I think there have been several good suggestions.

Thanks TedS TucsonJim howson ncitro Jlawles2 and acoleman43 for all of the info. Lots to think about. I may try portable with my 2 gallon that goes to 125PSI just to get the last few PSI in and see how that all works. It really is just to make the few PSI adjustments just before the day's travel, or at least I hope so.

I will let the group know what I decided and how it works.

Visited with a friend who uses a Porta-Cable Pancake, 150-psi max pressure, to fill his tires to 125-psi. The compressor can fill the tire to about 121-psi before the resistance is greater than what the compressor can put out. After that he lets the compressor refill to 150-psi at which point the upper limit switch kicks it off, gives the tire a blast of air and the compressor pressure drops back down to about 125-psi, then he bleeds the compressor down to about 120-psi where the lower limit switch kicks the compressor back on, lets the compressor build back up to 150-psi and repeats. Says he ages about a year filling the 6 tires this way.

My friend also said that he is looking into an on-board compressor and air bags for his truck but has not really dug into this yet. He will be looking for something that can put out enough air and a high enough pressure to fill his tires, too.

I used to have this problem with a 100 psi compressor filling 80 psi tires. The lower limit switch did not come on until it dropped to 70 or 75, making it a chore. That is why I suggested a 200 psi compressor to the OP. I would not want to try and fill 125 PSI tires with a 150 PSI compressor.

I replaced my home one with this one from Lowes, 175 PSI 5 gallon and on wheels. Great for most everything I do at home, unfortunately not available anymore.

Thanks JBill9694 and ncitro . Very good advice. Was thinking about the lower limit switch in some of my searches as it doesn't do any good trying to fill a tire to 125 psi if the lower limit switch is below that.

Tell your friend Air zenith is rated at 200 PSI (100% duty cycle), ARB is rated at 150 PSI (I believe...and 100% duty cycle) and Viair has compressors up to 200 PSI. THe 485C is a 200 PSI compressor with 100% duty cycle.

Air Zenith is the best performer as far as CMF.

Air Zenith is 12v only. ARB has 12V and 24V models. VIair does have some 24V models as well.

Calbar I use the Viair 450P-RV and it works like a champ handling the high psi that the Coopers under my Solitude 310GK require.

I’ve got a dual motor ARB compressor mounted under the hood in my tow rig. It runs my airbags, as well as auxiliary air from an outlet in the bed. It pumps up to 150# and can go 100% duty. It’s a beast. Not cheap, but has not missed a beat, ever.
