  • Drill Press and Accessories needed for it to function for Trailer modes and repairs

After years of using a vice/various clamps and a hand drill, and with my upcoming coroplast replacement project, it appears I will be drilling over 100 1/4" or similar size holes in mild steel. I also have a few planed wood working projects for the trailer needing precision holes drilled too ( drawer repair and adjustable shelving)

As I have time to shop and with Black Friday coming up and also Craig's List there are lots to choose from. This is just for DIY needs so exact precision is not really needed. I have HD and Tractor supply in town, and just about everything in Farmington NM about an hour away, including Lowe's and harbor Freight. So most brands such as Wen, Delta, Ryobi, Shop Fox, Jet, and may others available. I am hoping to see the unit first before ordering or buying.

    Questions

Bench top or floor unit. I do have a bench to put it on, but it also has my primary vice. I could use a portable bench so that is an option. Most bench top units are 50 to 100 lbs, so I would need my lift table to get it up there. I could mount to my lift table too. Floor model - basically a permanent location and need to be bolted to floor. Not as portable. Winner Bench Top

Swing distance - more is better from what I am reading - especially for wood working. It appears I need at least a 12" swing for the wood working. For the steel angle iron less would work.

Stroke length - for the steel angle iron it 's not as important, but could se the need to drill through 2.5" round pipe for an upcoming fence project, but for wood working it can make a difference - especially for mortise joints. For that I need about 3" depth.

Table - swing and tilt would be nice too. From reading the larger the size the better with plenty of mounting slots. 12" appears to be about the minimum recommended.

Speeds - in reading having a greater speed selection is important to be able to slow things down or be fast.

    Are there any other considerations?

This unit has been recommended https://www.harborfreight.com/power-...ess-38142.html

    Drill press Vice

Will something like this fit my current need https://www.harborfreight.com/4-inch...ill+press+vice

or do I need an adjustable one like this? https://www.harborfreight.com/5-in-c...oss+slide+vise It appear it takes up a lot of height on a bench top drill press.

This is all new to me so any help is appreciated. I am hoping to stay under $400 - $500 for everything if possible, but need it to work.

    Thanks

Cast iron is good. Cross-slide vise is overkill. You will be building jigs and fixtures to fit particular tasks.

I would get a standard 6" vice, I think the 4" is too small. If at all possible get a drill press with a square table, I hate the round ones as they are harder to clamp something to. Craigs list may be worth checking for a good old used drill press, Facebook market place also.

Get the bench mount press and just bolt it to your bench when needed, or search on Craigs list and get a Bridgeport milling machine or similar, this will do everything you need and a lot of other things, key way shafts for the baler for instance.

Bench top or floor model depends on the layout of your shop. I would tend towards a bench top model on a rolling workbench . . . but, that is just my preference for all my large tools. I would definitely go with the cross slide vice. I have one of these and use it all the time. Allows you to clamp the workpiece “close” to where you want it and then fine tune the alignment exactly, with the vice adjustments. Maybe more than you need for repetitive drilling, but you will find this valuable for future one-off jobs.

Gotta agree with Rob on this. I've got the bench and floor models (HF) also a 6" cross slide vice. You will love being able to adjust your work on 2 axis.

My personal preference is the benchtop model. And agree with Brian, 4" is too small. Room for humour here but probably run afoul of forum rules....

LOL**************** OK OK OK I will admit it. I need a 13 step program and probably less gin, I have non tool agoraphobia. It is very addictive and extreamly contagious here ( and this place is definitely not a cure or helping ) Some say there is no cure . The engineer in me says I must have the correct tool for the job. I am very good at back yard engineering, or as some call it a bush fix - not always successful. Now I know Red Green and Tim the Tool Man will disagree. but as Alton Brown says that I need a multitasker. All would say Duct Tape is the first solution (Alton used it on his dehydrator project).

But Scott you missed something extremely important here - beside tools we all need or crave the options to make the trailer better (solar. inverters, DC-DC, sumo, suspension upgrades, new trucks)....the list goes on and on) But to do that we need tools. That was the start of my sickness - the never ending circle. What's most important is the we all must keep SWMBO happy

I know I am deep in DO-DO,,,,but being happy is like a pig in ,,,,well I cant say here, but I am hearing it makes a great facial in some part of the world now with everything being green. I think Mother Earth News had an artificial on how to make it - but I could be wrong, but I never am

In getting older I have learned for me having the right tool makes me happy....as long as I don't bust the budget. so far SWMBO is being pretty understand about the cracks. She liked parts of Alaska, but probably hated most of the rough roads and the long drives. After all I got her to OK the Victron.

Getting the drill press and materials will be cheaper than having the repair shop do it and I can do it right the first time. Hopefully she understand that.

Now If I can only get Lippert to talk with my welder that would be good. There seems to be a lack of communication between them - well to be precise no response from Lippert to questions anyway. I copied GD Customer service on my last email asking Lippert to contact the repair place. Fingers crossed.

If this drill press is truly for the trailer, then why not get one that can actually be used on or in the trailer?

JBill9694 John, those tend to have extremely limited stroke capability and require them to be fastened to a ferrous object for use. A drill press is a much more versatile tool for fabrication as it allows for taller objects in various ferrous, non ferrous, and various other natural and synthetic materials to be machined. Another thing, those mag based drills are usually heavy and require thick material for sufficient magnetic clamping strength.

Yeap, you're right on all counts Jlawles2. But as long as I'm spending Yoda money, I don't mind being frivolous. As for securing the 38 lbs press to drill a 2" deep hole, I figure he can use his lifting table to move a 1" steel plate around. Oh, wait. That means only a 1" deep hole.

Well to update I got the following from WEN during the Black Friday and Christmas sales. Its a compromise on sizing but should do everything I need, even for my wood working projects. The HF models recommended were out of stock and with no coupons available abut the same cost.
WEN 4214 12-Inch Variable Speed Drill Press https://wenproducts.com/products/12-...27b58173&_ss=r
WEN DPA424 4 in. Drill Press Vise https://wenproducts.com/products/wen...cfb38c94&_ss=r I know Brian 6" would have been better but this will work for the projects I have planned.

And after looking at DIY stands and others I decided to get the following WEN this weekend
                      https://wenproducts.com/products/wen...f91f7715&_ss=r
                      Amazon had it cheaper
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...0?ie=UTF8&th=1 I got several Amazon gift cards and had a few left over from last year so I splurged.

So now I am ready to fabricate my coroplast cross members. Just need to order the coroplast material (still looking for a good source) stainless steel hardware and steel 1/2 by 1.5 angle iron to span across. I bought some socket wrench adapters for my die set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000TGM7HY...roduct_details to work in tight spaces the std tap handle wont work in and some GREENLEE 1/4x20 self tapping drills to try. They drill and tap the hole in one pass with a variable speed drill.

The folks that make WEN also make Delta - identical in most aspects but way more $$$ Also per reviews and You-tube parts appear to be interchangeable, but Wen stocks a lot of parts for theses units.

Thoughts are always welcome - especially if they help others

Perfect working height and shelf will come in handy for drill bit storage, etc. I do need to bolt it to the table though. I think I have the bolts I need in the garage which I cant get into due to the snow. The drill press has a work light and a lazer point for locating the drill bit on the work. It a 12" swing variable speed.. My 4" vice is sitting on the work table too - need to figure out how to clamp it down.

Next task is to get it to the garage without breaking anything or anyone.
