  • 2023 GMC with Standard 6' 10" bed

Hello, we just picked up our new GMC 2500HD that we ordered with the GMC puck system. We are now purchasing the hitch and have decided on the B&W Companion RVK3710.
The pin weight of our trailer is light relative to the max payload of our truck- (max payload 3,400# - trailer pin weight 1,516#). I thought I would set the hitch to the back position giving 2" more set back to allow for clearance to the cab. With the extended pin box and max turn radius design of the front cap, I am hoping that gives the clearance needed to make all but the sharpest turns.
I would appreciate any advice as to the choice of hitch and if a slider would be more appropriate?
    Thanks!
    Brad

I have the same truck but in a Chevy 3500. I have the non slider OEM puck mount hitch and can just about get to 90 degrees without hitting. I have the hitch set in the furthest back position also. The front of the truck is actually going slightly uphill also in the pictures. The slider is crazy heavy and I can take this one out in two pieces no problem. The slider you need a lift of some sort. No slider needed in my opinion for the reflection and the new GM trucks with the standard bed.

nprario, thanks very much for the pictures and information. They really help with the decision to go with the non sliding version.

I have a very similar setup and use a Curt 16k fixed hitch. No clearance issues. When GM created the longer standard box they moved the pucks back slightly in order to get the clearance needed for most fifth wheels. It was strangely insightful for GM.

Great post!!!! We bought a 2022 Silverado 3500 HD Hight County with 6 ft 10 “ bed. Have a 2023 337 Reflection on order. I have been searching Facebook marketplace place for two more months for B&W companion slider hitch. Absolutely zero out there. Lots of ones for 2016-2019 trucks and prices are $800-$1000 less than new. After reading this post think I’ll buy non slider

There is more to consider in choosing a manual slider hitch rather than a fixed position hitch than just clearance to the cab in a level 90 degree turn as shown in the pictures above. If you are forced to make this type of turn (which is very hard on the trailer suspension) unless the ground is perfectly level, you might still have contact. Being able to slide the hitch point back in the truck bed means that you can hitch/unhitch at an angle with the tailgate open and you can access the front compartment of the trailer while hitched to the truck.

The only draw back to my auto slider is hitching and unhitching must be under 10 degrees. I definitely like the slider as there is a drop off as I back in the drive from the street, and the street is narrow. Thankfully we have a 3 car wide drive to help lessen the harshness of backing in. It's still hard on the axles backing in being that narrow and I do end up at almost 90 for a short time.

I have had to pull the head off the slider, remove from pinbox, then reinstall on the slider, re hook to the trailer, and finally make adjustments to get the axles out of stress (pulling fore and aft a few times to allow them to relax). Pain, YES, worth it so I can get the camper in the drive, YES, Not having to worry when having to make stupid turns because of other people YES. And in one instance not having to get out in the rain to make the turn.

I had a Reese manual slider hitch for several years and it was “OK”. With the new truck, I upgraded to a puck mounted B&W manual slider. The B&W is way better than the Reese! Easier to unlatch for moving the hitch, smoother operation, much smaller clearances within the hitch making chucking less noticeable. Many will claim that flipping the lever to move the hitch is “too much trouble” . . . but, with all the things that I am out of the truck and checking before backing into a site, this one simple motion is the least of my concerns.

nprario I am the OP to this post and would like to ask you which of the height settings you chose (low, medium or the high setting).
I have the hitch assembled and set at the furthest back from the cab setting and medium height setting.
                  Thanks!

I have a Dodge with a 6'4" box. I don't need a slider. I can go 90 in a pinch. A slider can give you the benefit Rob mentioned and something to consider.
Myself, I can still have the tailgate down when I'm on an small angle, maybe 20*?... not a sharp angle, but it's not a common situation for me.

I have the hitch set on the lowest setting, and I had to unbolt the pin box and move it up to it's highest setting to get the trailer level.

I must be one of the odd ball truck owners who has a long bed truck for many reasons including not having to deal with truck/camper distances when turning and slider hitches. Continuing to buy long bed trucks has been a very intentional decision for me through the years. Also, I can't imagine the loss of all that cargo capacity when camping or using the truck in general. I know my desire for long bed trucks always requires me to order them or shop intently as there are just not as many around as the short beds. The flexibility that long beds provide is just too important to me to consider going smaller. During the summer I always have my Yamaha generator, firewood, grill propane tank, and gas also in the bed of the truck along with the room that my B&W puck companion hitch takes up.

I remember when an 8' bed was the normal standard bed and 6' was always a short bed, it's a shame that changed. I couldn't imagine having anything less than 8' bed and there are times i really wish a 10' was available.

Todd_P I think there are a couple of upfitters out there that offer a 10' bed for the cab and chassis models. If going to a 10' bed most likely I would want a hauler bed with low or no sides to ease putting stuff on the deck.
