  • Determining 5th wheel hitch towing capacity

Sorry folks, another 5th wheel hitch tow capacity question, my confusion stems from what others (rv dealer and Chevy) have told me. I’m driving a 2019 Silverado 2500HD, Z71, Duramax diesel, Allison 6 speed transmission, 3.73 axle, crew cab, 4 WD, 6’6” bed: I want to trade my Imagine 2400 BH bumper pull for a Momentum 328M toy hauler fifth wheel. Grand design web lists the Momentum with 2,450 lbs. as the average hitch weight,12,400 lbs UVW, 16,500 lbs GVWR, the Silverado lists 2,244 lbs. as max pay load, and GCWR 25,300 lbs. and GVWR of 10,000 lbs. Peer check my math but it appears I can not tow the 328M.

What GD is listing as pin weight is an empty pin weight. Loaded pin weight on that trailer will be around 3,800 lbs. You don't have enough truck. Use 23% of the trailer's GVWR to estimate a loaded pin weight. Compare that to your truck's true payload (truck's GVWR minus occupants, fuel, hitch, etc.) to come up with an estimated payload. The best way, though is to take your truck to the scales. 3/4-ton diesels are notorious for falling short on payload because of the weight of the engine and drivetrain.

I will agree with Rob, but I use the 20% method. My 2015 3500 only has 3661 pay load, I too think the 2500 will be under gunned for the Momentum.

If/When you shop for a new truck, make sure you look at the yellow payload sticker in the door jamb. This will give you a very good idea what you can tow before going buying.

Some more follow up regarding Silverado 2500 HD payload, I have called the Chevy dealer from which I purchased the truck, two separate calls, I also called a different dealership in hopes of getting some repeatability, and contacted Chevrolet corporate: I was given different numbers each time for pay load and tow limits, which are different from the owners manual and the door jam sticker. So in conclusion; the door jam sticker numbers may not be accurate, and may not include final vehicle options, I.e. tow package, plow preps, fifth wheel hitch prep etc.The VIN number may not include all vehicle options. I weighed the truck, it comes in at 8080 lbs. plus or minus 20 lbs. this includes 252 lbs of fuel, and 225 lbs of cargo, the gross vehicle weight is 10,000 lbs, this sums up to about 2,400 lbs of payload. The door jam lists 2244 lbs. bottom line, like you guys stated earlier, I don’t have enough truck for fifth wheel towing. It’s my opinion this whole cumbersome (to say the least) process is due to incompetence by Chevrolet.

Seaweige - darn hate that when we have to go get a new truck ! ......oh well !

Different generations and different manufacturers seem to calculate various weights differently. On our generation 2012 LTZ Plus, the truck UVW (and thus posted payload) did include a driver @150 lbs., full fuel, and all options built at the factory. Our empty truck weight came in just a little higher due to the driver weight being a little more than 150 lbs. ; some things in the center console and under rear seat:, along with few minor light weight non-factory included options added after delivery.

The payload listed on the door of each individual truck is about the only thing that is accurate. Tow guides and other published documents are not vehicle specific in regards to payload ratings. You can get the tow ratings from the guides but not the payload rating. I wouldn't trust anything the dealer, salesman or GM customer service reps say.

Having said this, none of it really matters if you're trying to stay within the payload rating of your truck. If you plan to get that Momentum, you need a one ton. The only real question is SRW or DRW.
