  • Am I missing something? Help?

I have an opportunity to buy a f-350 super duty DRW and a GD 380 FL from a woman whose dad owned them a recently passed away. Is it me or was he way over the truck limit? I was surprised on the limited capacity on the truck. After seeing this I am not going to buy. Am I missing something?

What is the concern? That DRW has a lot of payload.

DO you know model year of F-350, engine and rear axel ratio? GCVWR could be anywhere from 20,000# to 40,000#.

The gear ratio isn't popping up with the vin.

The yellow sticker on the door with "payload should not exceed" will let you know what the capability is.

                  With a 2017 DRW F350 6.7 Powerstroke:

                  3.55 axle ratio: 36,000# GCVWR. Gooseneck/5th wheel towing capacity: 27,300# to 28,400#
                  4.10 axle ratio: 40,000# GCVWR. Gooseneck/5th wheel towing capacity: 31,300# to 32,000#

Looks like you're totally good with that setup. A lot of extra capacity with that truck. Will pull the trailer very well and you will never have to worry about capacity of the truck.

Oh.....With a 14000# GVWR and the vehicle is probably around 8500# empty, you got a lot of payload....probably around 5000#. Like Brian suggested, look at the yellow door sticker and it will provide the exact payload number.

                    • F-350 w/ 6.2L Gas V8: Up to 16,700 pounds (Conventional or Gooseneck/5th Wheel)
                    • F-350 w/ 6.7L Diesel V8: Up to 21,200 pounds (Conventional), or up to 35,750 pounds (Gooseneck/5th Wheel)
                    • F-350 w/ 7.3L Gas V8: Up to 21,000 pounds (Conventional), or up to 21,200 pounds (Gooseneck/5th Wheel)
The above is from the net and likely on the bottom end of things. But even the 6.2L V8 at 16,700 can tow the trailer.

The trailer has a dry weight of around 15K lbs and say a wet weight close to 17K.

Take the vin to a dealer and get the specs print out. From that you should have all you need to make your decision.

                    acoleman43 has the same confirmation.

                    Good luck.

I will respectfully disagree. You were smart enough to ask a question when it wasn't clear in your mind what you were buying. There's way too many of us (including me) in the "Two Time TV Club" because we bought the wrong truck (because we DIDN'T ask questions)!

Next step is to do a very thorough physical inspection on both of those vehicles. Please follow up and let the forum know how it goes.

Howard is correct on the inspections. If the owner is willing , or if your willing, take the truck to the servicing Ford dealer and have them do the inspection, including a full diagnostic. It can be pricey as my local Ford dealer (the one I don't use) charges $100 to just plug the truck into the computer. Also find out where the truck was serviced and check the maintenance records.

The other thing ask if they have any Cat scale tickets, or take it to a scale and weigh everything.
