  • Anyone Towing a 2020 230RL with a Ford F-250 4WD Short Bed?

Just wondering how the F-250 pulls the 230RL. Any payload concerns?
    Thanks.

Gas or Diesel? Big payload difference between the 2.

Forum moderators are not GD employees--we are volunteers and owners presumably just like yourself. Unless specifically mentioned otherwise, we have nothing to gain should you choose to purchase a product or engage a service we discuss on this forum.

Please don't take this post as a criticism of anyone, but I see so many posts asking, can I tow XX camper with XX truck. What really needs to be asked is; can I stop XX camper with XX truck in an emergency? Precious little info is given owners in that regard and that, IMO, is a huge issue, especially in the half ton towing arena. As a new owner of a 2017 384GK, I towed with an F350 DRW for nearly a year with little or no trailer brakes because I was told that was normal and I didn't know any better. At the end of the first year when I complained to my dealer, it was discovered that I only had braking on only one side of the camper due to a wiring issue. After getting that fixed, I still felt the drum brakes were lousy and had Performance disc brakes installed. Finally, I had brakes, "real brakes". On a subsequent trip, a tour bus in front of me on the interstate had a catastrophic failure and came to a rapid stop from 70 to a full stop on the interstate. I applied maximum braking and came to a stop 3 ft from the car in front of me which was between me and the bus. Had it not been for the disc brakes, i feel sure my rig would have been on the evening news. Owners should think about scenarios like that when deciding what they need in the way of tow vehicles and equipment.

Thanks, that's a great point about stopping. I'm interested to know where you purchased your disc brakes and did you install them yourself?

Too bad nobody makes disc brakes for 3500# axles, even when adjusted the factory drums are pitiful.

I called Performance brakes and they determined what I needed/wanted on my rig. I paid for the parts (All GM parts) and they were shipped to an authorized installer who did the job at the 2019 GD Tennessee Rally. I purchased the 8K disc brake kit which gives you a larger outer bearing and larger wheel lugs. Also, I purchased the HD shackles and wetbolts. The parts were around $2200 if memory serves (sometimes it doesn't) and installation was $1100 ($200 off at the rally). Best money I ever spent on the camper. One thing I really liked is that I watched the installer replace the OEM bearings, which had near to nothing in grease, with new larger, beefier bearings and really grease them well. He said that when I was ready to have the bearings repacked, call him and find out if he will be in my area or at a Rally and he will inspect and repack them. He did an awesome job and even did a ride-a-long for a couple of miles as we left the rally to do some max effort stops and tweak the gain setting. John Anglin and his wife were the installer's names and I can't recommend them enough. He and his wife had installed over 900 sets of disc brakes.
