  • Galvanic Corrosion?

I noticed on my Curt Tuning Point pin box that is 5 months old, that the washers are corroding. I’m wire brushing the rust in order to paint, but if this is dissimilar metals corrosion, it will continue unless the washers are replaced or something else is changed.

Has anyone else run into this issue? Any suggestions?

Painting will seal out the water electrolyte. Without electrolyte there will be no corrosion between dissimilar metals. Paint away.

I do not think that it is dissimilar metals but cheap washers made from junk steel and poor plating practice. Clean them up and paint them or replace with better quality.

Based on the paint fretting around the washers, it appears they have been removed and replaced. More than likely the coating is shot or they were plain steel washers.

Best bet is to remove them one at a time, clean, paint, and then reinstall. you may want to touch up the underlying surface while removed. Double check the torque on the bolts if you choose to remove and replace.

Most of the plating on the RV fasteners is poor quality. In general, miscellaneous fastener plating is not as robust as it used to be.
