During de-winterizing inspection, I noticed that one of my safety chains is broken. What’s the best way to repair it?

timh0042 I could cut off the broken link and add something like this rated to your tongue weight or higher (I assume there are two of them, so at the tongue weight its twice what you should need).

Maybe I should just use something like this as a replacement? https://www.amazon.com/Curt-Manufact.../dp/B001EOV3CUTim H.

Coming back to this since my other chain also broke... I think I know what is going on now... My hitch head is pinching the chains. I have an Equalizer and you can see that there's not much room between the hitch and the trailer chain connection point. My theory is that I've turned too sharply at some point and that pinched the chains and sheered them. I ended up getting pair of these: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EOV3DO
I think it's fine for now, but seems like there's a design flaw here... either the hitch head or the trailer side safety chain mount location... or both!Tim H.

Tim, I saw similar damage on a trailer before. Fist reaction is definitely your hitch hitting the trailer tongue most likely during turns.
I would consider removing the original chain anchor and replacing with 2 https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...waAisyEALw_wcB using the screw shut links. Use https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...RM-910022.html sized for the chain on the trailer. If the original tags are still on the chains there should be a capacity and size of chain.Joseph

I don't think you are the first person to have issues with the chain mounting point hitting the hitch. There are other weld on points. There are also this type https://www.etrailer.com/Accessories...375471001.html which would allow for replacing damaged chains or removal to have them tested (Our Canadian friends I think may need this as that's why safety chains on trailer have the wind chimes on them).Joseph
