  • Reese Goosebox VS BW Companion Gooseneck to 5th Wheel

I preface this post with all suggestions and ideas welcome and I have the tendency to confuse matters. GD 5th wheel 320 mks 2018. I had dealer remove lippart 1621 pin box and install reese goosebox. I have been towing the camper for 5 years almost accident free. I did on one occasion have the camper contact the truck when performing a tight turn in an unlevel parking lot. I have about 6 to 7 inches of clearance between bed rails and camper now on each side. Even with this clearance, certain unlevel terrains will result in camper coming extremely close to bed rails. We were detoured due to an accident and traffic was leaving the road way on to a dirt road that was part of the detour. The pavement was 3 feet higher on the downslope compared to dirt road. Right side of truck and camper was on downslope while left side still on asphalt. I knew the camper would get close. I stopped with about 15/16 of an inch before contact. I told the officer I cant make it. I had to back up, he had to stop traffic, and I had to back in to a driveway and turn around to allow traffic to continue. With all of this said, BW makes a companion hitch for gooseneck set up. It slides in to gooseneck hitch installed under truck bed. It is a slider hitch part number RVK 3405. I would lose payload because hitch is heavy. Approximately 380 lbs but I have it to lose. Will this 5th wheel hitch with a pin box instead of goosebox limit left to right uneven terrain significantly more than the goosebox? Could I have made the detour with the hitch instead of goosebox? If it does limit or make it safer with the limitations, are the downfalls potential damage to the truck frame or camper frame by dispersing that force elsewhere in extreme unlevel terrain? Lastly, I can drop the goosebox approximately 1 inch by lowering it one hole with the 4 bolts on the frame of the camper. This will give me another inch or so and I can inflate the air bag to 50 psi. Towing would be slightly up in the front with a little more weight on the rear axle of camper? Anyone else have this issue and is going with the 5th wheel hitch a better fix? The solve is more clearance and not worrying about uneven terrain at campgrounds, parking lots, and anywhere else I may tow the camper? Left and right seems to the number one issue.
