  • First 5th Wheel - Enough Truck?

I have a 2018 374TH that seems to be the heaviest one that GD makes. I’m looking at getting a 2020 GMC 3500 Dre Duramax to pull it with. Any comments or suggestions on how the GMC will handle it?

Thomas - welcome to Grand Design's Forum. I took the liberty of moving your post to the Technical side under Towing and Hitches. You'll get lots of inputs here shortly, I'm sure! Guest -- over to you.

Any brand one ton truck (Chevy/GMC, Ford, RAM) will be able to tow the 376TH. As long as it is a diesel, and more important, a dually. This will make travel easy and enjoyable.

Go ahead and get the GMC and enjoy.

That trailer has a GVWR of 20,000 lbs, just like my Momentum 394M and if it's loaded to that weight or even close to that weight, your pin weight for the trailer will be North of 4000+ lbs. A SRW truck really shouldn't be used on heavy trailers like that. Are there people that do it? YEP! Are there people that tow overloaded? YEP, but that doesn't make it right.
        Good advice from Triplethreat.

Agree a DRW Diesel is the way to go where you will want to pay very close attention to the rated payload based in how your new truck is equipped. This information will be found on the door tags of the truck where GM has worked to simplify this topic with added information. The Duramax will have no issues handling your trailer GVW.

I'm parked next to a GM Duramax DRW pulling a Momentum 376. He said he's north of 32K! He sheepishing admitted, "I need to cut down on the tools I carry."

Good grief - that puts him well into the F450 (or equivalent) range at 32,000 combined weight and probably outside the 1 ton dually of any brand for GVWR or GCWR (unless specially ordered with max GVW springs+ when loaded let alone the rear axle rating. Thomas Purser Be very careful when looking at trucks to see how they are equipped for towing. Most one ton trucks on the lots I look at are not max GVW towing set up. You definitely need a DRW .

                  Hope this helps

BTW - I see this is your first post - welcome to the Forum

PS - you should double check wit your DMV too as you will definitely be over the 26K combined rated limit that may require a special license (CDL, etc)

Thank you all for your responses! I apologize for not being clear. Yes I will absolutely purchase a Dually. I don’t carry a lot of tools and will not exceed 20k with my Solitude nor will I exceed 9k in that Dually so I will have a maximum combined weight of 29k. That being said,, I know the GMC 3500 Denali Dually with Duramax is rated to tow 30k and rated for 13500 gross combined weight of truck. Therefore I will definitely be close to the maximum rating of that truck so I’m looking to hear from those who have experienced pulling this Based on the info I just shared. Thanks in advance!

It appears GMC has upped the specifications for their 2020 model 14000 GVWR https://www.gmc.com/trucks/sierra/2500hd-3500hd/denali

Yoda Indeed it appears so my friend. That makes me feel much more confident in this GMC!

My next question concerns Drivers license. I live in MS which doesn’t require a class A non-cdl (or even offer one)
but NC and some other states do. So is my home of record drivers license sufficient?

GCWR on the 2020 GMC can be as high as 43500lbs.

As far as I know you home state requirements rule - but not an expert in this area

TN, my state of residence doesn't require any special type of license either, but every state must honor my home state requirements. Having said that, you do still have to abide by each and every state's rules of the road, so to speak. In other words, let's say your home state allows triple towing (a trailer behind your camping trailer), but the state you are driving through does NOT allow triple tow. In that case you would be in violation of that state's law and be subject to a fine or whatever they impose for violating that law. Same with speed limits and such. TN interstates allow for 70 MPH towing a RV trailer, but California for example I believe it is 55 MPH. So the driver's license is reciprocal in every state, but you still abide by each state's rules of the road laws.
Thank you very much for that info!!
