  • TSD Fuel Card - Working the Math

If you're new to the TSD Fuel Card (as I still consider myself new, too), the math is kind of confusing.

At the pump the total will be the advertised price at the station. For example, today at a Pilot the advertised price (and what showed on the pump) was $2.959/gallon. What the EFS app showed later was 2.244/gallon. The bill reflects I pumped 28.070 gallons for a total of $63. (They must round up since the math says $62.99?)

What's confusing is this reflects 100% of the discount. EFS will keep 10% of the discount, so instead of seeing $63 drafted from my account it will be ~$65, since the discount was $20.06 off the advertised price. (We don't get to keep all of the discount--only 90% of it.)

    Confused yet?

When the "statement" comes in by email it's formatted for an accountant, but with a little applied brain power it's not too hard to figure out.

Bottom line: just remember that the price you see in the PRICE LOCATOR section of their app is the full discounted price. You'll pay just a bit more.

One more thought on the subject--USE THE PRICE LOCATOR feature in the EFS App! At a Love's Travel Stop in Florida the Price Locator showed $2.129. At a Love's on I-85 in Georgia the price per gallon was $3.949. No kidding. I skipped that Love's and went to the Pilot down the road for the 2.244 mentioned earlier.

Thanks for the update Howard, I have been wondering about how this was working for you. I have a Love's and a Pilot within 4 miles of my house and have been considering getting this card, I guess I will have to get it.

We got the card recently, have only been able to use it 3 times so far, but are happy with the savings. FYI, on the TSD FB page today they posted a 'heads up'. Love's will be implementing a $0.40 fee on every transaction. (Apparently there has always been a 0.65 per transaction, which Love's used to eat. Now they will only cover 0.25 of the fee. Pilot will cover 100% of the fee.) But since we are sometimes saving that much per gallon, I don't have a problem with that.

Wish we had signed up sooner before we traveled 2200 miles south in Jan!

There is an active thread on this elsewhere in cyberspace which has been going on for some time. There are some folks sharing some excellent savings as Howard shared. Looks to be a very good program. Is this the correct link to the TSD program ? I trust it is OK to share this.

We're getting ready to head out to the Las Vegas rally and will be using our TSD card for the first time. Have you been able to use it at the pump, or did you have to go inside to pay? I changed my pin# when I got the card. When I get to the pump, is the card and the pin # all I'll need to complete the transaction?

The PIN is what you use to log into the EFS App. The CONTROL NUMBER is what you use at the pump. Typically the Control Number is the last four of your SSN.

You do not need to go inside.

If you haven't turned off the cash advance feature, pay close attention to the questions at the pump! If you select "Yes" to the cash advance it leaves your card open. As you know I've turned that feature completely off and urge everyone else to do so as well.

              Thanks much howson.
I just found a Facebook group that is run by TSD. It has some great Q&A information. If anyone is interested, the group name is "TSD RV Fuel Program".

Your comments about the cash advance are spot on. In fact some frequent users of the card set up a dedicated checking account that is only used for fuel purchases. This prevents emptying of your primary checking account if there were ever a serious breach.

As Howard said, you just need card and control number. We have only used it at Pilot so far. Downloaded their app, and you can add your EFS card number into the app as a payment type. When you get to the station, open the app and tap that you want fuel. It will ask you a couple of questions (like which lanes you are fueling at). Then it will give you a code that you enter at the pump. Don’t even need to have your EFS card out to do it this way.

Loves has an app too that we also downloaded, but haven’t been to one of those yet. From what I have read, some people have had trouble at the Loves pumps and do need to go inside.

There is a FaceBook group called “tsd rv fuel program” run by TSD which is worth joining as it answers many questions.

My problem right now is that I can't get the App to work on my phone. I have loaded it a couple of times and it keeps telling me that I have the wrong account or password. I have no trouble logging into my computer though. Will use it for our trip to Texas at the end of April so would like to see if I can get the app to work.

I had trouble at first, too, until I realized the passcode was the pin #. Also, make sure the card number entered is all 19 digits. My card has 6 numbers, a space and then 3 more, followed by 10 on a lower line. All 19 of those numbers (without any spaces) must be in the card # line.

yes, Dan, that's it. If you plug in "Changing Lanes" as the reference Chad and Tara will get a small referral fee. (Their video was how I learned of the program.)

Thanks Howard. Tried all of that in you response. Still came back with the same response. Haven't tried it in a couple of weeks so probably should try it again just to make sure and then call the help line. Want to make sure that it is working before I travel so I get the best prices and discounts.

What version of Android? My phone says "10"--not very familiar with Android versions or this phone, but I know with the old Tracfone I had (and much earlier version of Android) I'd have problems on occasion with apps.

Unfortunately saw this on the TSD Facebook page today:

As of the end of the week, Pilot is officially retracting their discounts from our program due to their relationship with Good Sams. Good Sams has an exclusive contract with Pilot which prevents them from giving any discounts to the RV community through any other means. Every other discount is still in place.

Apparently this also applies to Flying J as they’re part of the same company.

Not sure but I will have to check to see what version. Maybe that is the issue and I will need to update.
