  • More towing questions GCWR

Hi folks. I am trying to understand the ins and outs of towing. The GCWR has me confused, and exactly how it is measured.

My 2018 Ram 3500 has a CCC of 4400 lbs. I'm good there

My confusion is with the GCWR which is listed at 25300 lbs. My GVWR is 12300 lbs, my fully loaded trailer weight is listed at 13990 lbs. Is the GCWR of my setup 12300 + 13990? Or is it less due to the weight transfered to the axle of the trailer?

Sorry for yet another towing capacity question but I want to be sure I am legal and it makes no sense to me.

    Thanks

Basically yes but not in the real world. You just quoted maximum numbers for both the truck and trailer. In reality you won't get to those maximum numbers unless you just try hard to bring your entire house with you.

You won't really known your combined weight until you load the truck and trailer down for travel and then go by a CAT Scale. That scale will show you your steer axle, drive axle, trailer axles, and your combined weight. As long as your combined weight is less than 25,300 your good for your GCWR.

What is really important is you CCC and truck axle ratings. You don't want to exceed those. Your pin weight effects all that.

It is easy to mix up GCWR and the various different actual weights. As long as the GCW of your truck, its contents, the trailer and its contents is less than GCWR you are good. For this calculation, pin weight can be considered as truck cargo or part of trailer weight. It is not double counted.

Asckreef notes, the most critical weight is usually what the 5th wheel pin adds to the truck weight. This should not take the truck over its GVWR including anything else that you are carrying in the truck. The rear axle capacity (should be on the white door label) is an important limit to keep an eye on.

Thanks for the info. The key is that I agree that I likely won't reach the max weight numbers so I will be under the GCWR.

I will find a scale to make sure.
