  • Protecting Motorcycle in Truck Bed (Previously titled "Spacekap!")

Edit to post: My motorcycle is exposed in the bed of my truck so I want to cover and protect it. (This was always the plan when I bought my 315RLTS.) I've update the title of this thread to better convey it's purpose. Below is one option for the motorcycle that I've stumbled across:

    -----Original first post below------

Anyone have any experience with this Canadian company's products? Their "Diablo" cap looks like a potential fix to my desire to shelter my Goldwing in the back of my truck. (Without the shelves, obviously, but I like the optional side storage!)

I didn't look at the cost. I wonder how much that puppy runs. The concept, though, is almost exactly what I want. The reality might be much, much more basic.

At first I thought it was a topper, but its a slid in shell - looks well built.

How high is your bike in the bed? The reason I asked is the other day I saw a high boy standard fiberglass topper hinged on one side (long hinge with lifting set up mounted to inside of bed rail). In the bed they had a swing lift for a wheel chair. The whole topper tilted to one side and the man just swung the motorized chair out of the bed for his wife using the lift and then the topper just dropped back down and locked. Very slick set up. I looked for it on line but did not find anything. Looked like a factory set up.

Getting actual measurements is on my stuck-at-home-list-to-do. If you see that setup again snap a pic!

Here's another option I recently stumbled across--excited about this one!

I'll get swinging doors instead of that ramp and don't want the rack on top, either. Instead of windows I'll have them install side cargo boxes (as shown in some other pictures on their website).

Here's the setup without the cap:

I played around in Photoshop to get an idea (it's very crude!) what it will look like. Of course it won't be red--it will match the truck if I buy it. There will be two storage boxes on the street side, too.

Depending on the height, you might want to look at Softtopper. I've had one for years and it's both lighter, (about 48 lbs) and a lot less expensive than those hardtops. Plus you can either fold it down or remove it easily. It might fit your needs.

I'd love to get something like that, but I have to able to stand up inside the bed. The ramp I have in the bed (LoadAll) effectively raises the bed 8". I need another 5' to clear the highest point on the motorcycle. That's the windshield, and that's with it lowered as low as it will go. Then I need room for my noggin as I ride up (and down) the ramp. So basically the size of a Lance truck camper without the interior. That's what excited me when I spotted the Ranger--appears to fit the bill!

For those that aren't convinced I'm nuts, check out the video below! The video is two years ago and sharp observers may note the truck is not a dually--and they are right! The truck shown was the F-250 "mistake" I've written about many times.

Its not the most aerodynamic looking thing. Knowing how handy you are, have you looked at rehabbing an old slide in camper? Gut the interior and just use the shell? one of those pop up ones may give you enough room to travel with it down, and just pop it up for loading/unloading .

Lastly, and I hope you don't mind, your truck has a lot of Squat in the photo and I would guess your steering, while it might feel ok would be compromised in an emergency, Have you considered air bags or something similar?
