  • Actual fuel mileage of the new 2020 Ford 6.7 diesel

    TucsonJim

To complement Jim's thread. I am hoping to gather information to help folks (and myself) choose between the 2020 6.7 new generation diesel and the new 7.3 gas Godzilla motor. The 7.3 thread at the other place has offered some excellent information.

If you have a 2020 Ford 6.7 diesel please report your fuel mileage towing, solo, and your rear end gearing. Please only 2020 Ford 6.7 diesels folks. I have tons of information on previous versions, but with the new 10 speed and engine upgrades specific information is important.

Also report if there have been any issues with the new 6.7 or the new 10 speed auto trans.

    Thanks
    Keith

I have a 2020 F-350 6.7 with the Tremor package which comes with a 3.55 rear end. I've only towed about 1,900 miles so far towing my 2020 Solitude 310GK at about 14,800lbs. Mileage is around 11.5 towing. 21-22ish on the highway empty. I tow at 60mph. Empty driving speed is low 60’s.

No problems with the engine or transmission - or anything else for that matter. I really like the 2020 Tremor and would buy the same truck again. I may actually keep this one for a while (I'm on my 3rd truck in 4 years).

      Here are the results from my 2020 F-350 6.7L CCLB 4x4 FX4 (w/3.55)

The overall mpg for the 1st 1100+ miles is 20.2mpg and since the last tankful (over 500 miles) the mpg is 22 mpg. During the 1st 400 miles I did tow a small utility trailer for some very short (under 20 miles) distances and the milage includes around town driving (ie: drive through, bank, etc.)

Just starting the break-in and the mpg is increasing ever so slightly.

Camper (Solitude S-Class 2930RL) is on order and should arrive in September, so no actual towing mpg yet.

Mostly highway and mostly unloaded .... my prior truck was a 2005 Chevy 3500 Duramax CCLB 4x4 and it would average around 16 mpg under similar circumstances.

2020 F450 6.7L 10 speed 4:30 gears. I still only have 2300 miles on the truck so still breaking in but on 2 different 400 mile hwy runs at 70 it averaged 18.5-19.0 mpg. Only towed the Solitude about 100 miles so far but it's running 10mpg towing at 60-63 mph in 10th gear. Very happy with the new engine compared to the prior 2019 model.

So if I am reading numbers correctly the difference between the 3:55 and 4:30 gearing is about 3-4 MPG solo and only 1.5 to 2MPG towing in favor of the 3:55 (notwithstanding the extra towing capacity of the 4:30 gearing). Compared to the numbers I have on the Godzilla so far the 6.7 is about 6 to 7 MPG better solo and towing give or take. Hopefully someone will check my numbers. Now I need to do the math on gas/diesel pricing and operating cost. Ill get to that later - need to move irrigation around right now.

Sounds like a good summation of the numbers. Yes the new 7.3 is a bad...fanny lol...motor and will be a good choice for a lot of people. Personally I'm just too addicted to feeling 1050 lb ft of torque pulling 26000 pounds up a hill and not downshifting or slowing down at all. The only gauge that moves is the boost gauge lol. Also when you're comparing mileage between 3:55 and 4:30 gearing you're comparing a 350 to a 450 and the F450 is at least 500 pounds heavier, not a lot on a 4 ton plus truck I know but weight is weight. 4:30's not available on F350's.

I'm now at 16k miles. The motor and transmission are running fine. Towing is 14.5 mpg and non-towing is 18 mpg, according to the onboard computer. The rear end is a 3.55. Using the DTE when the tank is just filed I calculate 19.7 mpg.

                      I have a 2020 F250 Crew Cab short bed 4x4. I average between 8.5 and 9.5 towing and about16 mixed (city/highway) and 20-21 highway.

How are y'all getting 12+ mpg towing?

Down hill both ways Just kidding. I am curious too as his trailer is about 1500lbs heavier than yours. It could be gearing and towing speed. What rear end gearing do you have? And what is your towing speed. I ordered the 3.55 on the 2022 I have coming - someday
TedS What speed do you tow at? Then we might be able to compare.

I tend to drive fast whether towing or not. On the interstate I'll tow at 65+ on cruise control with 10th gear locked out. Draft the semis; just kidding.
I'm pleased with the truck's performance.

How does locking out 10th help?. I need to read up on locking gears out - something new for me to learn. Any suggestions where to start reading?

PS I drive like you and try to keep up with traffic, and yes's even a bit of drafting now and then . Like across Wyoming on one of thier 50 mp out of the west calm days

On edit I found this thread helpful on the gear lock out, plus a few other tricks, but not sure they are all good, like using the EB mode and manual shifting.

I lock out 10th to reduce frequency of downshifting. I also like to keep the rpm up a bit, more throttle control of speed.

I don't mind getting into it to not be the slow guy going uphill.

Billings to Fort Collins was a treat, an experience.
