I was unhitching the truck from the 5th wheel and forgot to put my tailgate down., That said, I ran the tailgate into the kingpin. Messed up my tailgate pretty bad. Needs to be replaced. My question is, is the pin box and welds strong enough to handle this without causing damage? Thank you

The pin box is strong enough to carry the weight of the RV while traveling down the road add to the bumps , wind , and undulations. Your tailgate should be no match for the pin box.
Sorry for your experience , I have hit the pin box with the corner of my truck , pin box won that battle too.

I'll agree with Country Campers . The pin box and the frame attachments for it are WAY stronger than a tailgate - and designed for a lot of fore-and-aft force, which is what pulling forward with the truck put on it. Sorry about your experience, though! Have you looked at fifth wheel tailgates? They have a "V" for the king pin and will likely be less expensive than an OEM tailgate (though not as secure if you use a locked Tonneau cover when not towing).
