  • Towing 31MB with 2500?

I am in love with the 31MB but I think it might be too much for our truck to handle. Upgrading the truck is not in the cards as we just got this truck 2 weeks ago. We have a Ram 2500 6.4L Hemi with 3.73 gears. Is there anyone here with the same truck setup that pulls a 31MB (possible long shot)? Can it even be done?

Also, if you're on one of the numerous sites that I've already asked this question, I apologize lol. I keep getting mixed responses so I'm still not sure!

Hi there. My son has a 2019 6.4L Hemi Ram 2500 and it has much more capacity than gas trucks I've owned in the past. One of the key aspects is the payload capacity. That is almost always the limiting factor when pulling a fifth wheel. The 31MB will have a pin weight of a around 2200 pounds when fully loaded. If you're careful and don't overload the truck, I'm guessing you're going to be fine. But let's get some specific information directly off your truck.

Take a look at the photograph below. You'll see that the capacity is circled in red. Take a look at your driver's door and find that sticker. What does yours say?

Okay - You'd need to make sure you were careful with your weigh loading. I'd try to keep about 2200 on the pin. If the hitch weighs 140 pounds, that puts you at 2,340. This means you still have 651 pounds of payload left for the driver, passenger and any cargo you're carrying. I've seen people push the limit with much less pad and be successful. Just try to keep the total payload to the 2991#

Next, you'll need to verify the towing capacity of the truck. According to the website, the 31MB has a gross vehicle weight rating of 11,995#. You'll need to check your truck's owners manual or the 2015 trailer life towing guide to see if your truck has at least that much towing capacity. I'm attaching the 2015 trailer life towing guide so you can look up your specific truck.

If you are good on the towing capacity, the last thing to check is that you don't exceed your truck's Rear Axle Weigh Rating and the tire ratings. It's pretty rare to exceed those if you aren't over payload, but you'd still need to do some calculations to make sure.

If you do decide to purchase the 31MB, I'd recommend that you add a set of air bags to your tow vehicle in order to level the ride.

Tow capacity is 12440. Not sure where to find the rear axle weight rating? Is that on the sticker in the door?

Yep, it's probably on a white sticker near the door. But you probably won't be able to do much with it until you actually get the RV and can get everything weighed. You'll most likely be fine, but if you're a little over on the RAWR or the tire loading, you can move the loads more forward in the truck or more to the rear of the RV in order to reduce the cargo or pin weight.

I'm just another owner, but based on what I'm seeing, you appear to be in pretty good shape. There are some calculators that you can use to double-check. Howard howson (Screen name Howson) has put together some great reference material in the towing section of the forum. You can find it here:

TusconJim, would you recommend air bags over Sumo Springs? If yes, why? Thank you sir.

Scott - They will both meet the needs of most owners. But Sumo Springs are pretty worry free and never spring an air leak.
