  • Garage Cargo Limit

I purchased a Grand Design Momentum 31g toy hauler travel trailer with a 13' garage in the rear. I am trying to find out if there is a limit on how much weight can be carried in the garage. When I was looking at toy haulers, most of them had a sticker in the garage area that specified how much weight could be carried in the garage (i.e. Max Cargo Capacity 1500 lbs). When i looked at the Momentum 31g, I noticed there was no such sticker in the garage. I asked the sales guy, service guy, technical support hotline, and Grand Design tech. support if the garage had a weight limit. NOBODY can tell me how much weight can/should be carried in the garage. Basically, the only response I get is "Subtract the UVW from the GVWR to get your cargo capacity and as long as you don't exceed the cargo capacity, and you keep the weight distributed evenly you should be fine." My concern is that this cargo capacity refers to the weight available for cargo distributed evenly throughout the trailer. In my case, i want to put 1600 lbs in the garage which is in the back. I have tried in vain to get an answer. I was hoping Grand Design would be able to give me some specs regarding weight distribution. After all, they designed and built the thing. But nope. All I got was "load your side by side in the back and take the trailer for a spin and see how it handles." That seems like a stupid, and potentially dangerous way to find out if your weight distribution is off. So, has anyone hauled a side by side in the garage area of the Momentum 31g or something similar? If so, how did it handle? Thank you.

Very interesting question and a valid concern IMHO. The reason I find this fascinating is the dramatic difference in tongue weight there will be when the 31G is loaded with the "toy" in the garage and then without it. As you (hopefully) know, tongue weight on a travel trailer is a critical value that must be within a percentage range to ensure sway is not induced. Sway is very dangerous and can end a travel day in a hurry.

If you'd like to work through the process of determining what is best for your trailer, that's a process we can walk through. I don't have a Toy Hauler (obviously) but the process of weighing and evaluating a setup will apply just like it did with my 315RLTS. The variable in your situation is with/without the "toy".

Let me know if you'd like to go down this path. It will be time-consuming but you'll "know" when done that your setup is about as good as it can get without major modifications.

Well per GD web page you have right at 3K in cargo capacity GVWR - unloaded weight). What does the sticker on the trailer say your cargo capacity is? Label with the weight information should be on the front left side of the trailer. Then there is a note in the GD specifications that the tie downs for the garage are rated at 2500 lbs. That's about the only hint I could find. I would guess your practical limit is about 2K weight back there giving you 1k for food/water/propane and stuff. No matter what, Howard howson is correct on getting weights on the trailer to determine where your at loaded for travel.
