  • 260 RD pin weight

Anyone check the ACTUAL pin weight on 2021 260 RD ? Have 2017 F150 3.5 ecoboost with tow rating 10,500 , payload at 1,917. I know payload will be tight. Prefer not to have to go to F250. Maybe a F150 w/ max payload?

No experience with Reflections, but pretty sure the answer is "It depends". What you carry and were will impact your pin weight. General rule of thumb for fivers seems to be a pin weight of 20% to 25% of total weight.

John brings up a good point. As a rule of thumb, I always try to go with 22.5% of the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating when calculating the pin weight of a FW.

The GVWR of a 260RD is 9,995 pounds. 22.5% of 9,995# is 2,249#. If you plan for that, you should be in pretty good shape.

Its my understanding from seeing many members do this math over the years that all of the fifth wheels pretty much require the max payload package to be towable by a F150. Cate&Rob has one and tows a 303 with it, and has a great experience.

One thing I would suggest is if you decide to move to a Super Duty, skip the F250 and go straight to a F350 especially if you go diesel. The weight of the diesel engine really reduces the F250 payload to the point that ends up less than some F150 trucks. No difference in ride, and the cost difference is usually minimal.

I agree with Neil's response. I originally had a 2015 RAM 2500 diesel which I was very fond of and did a terrific job towing our large travel trailer. When we traded up to our 337RLS 5th wheel I planned on ordering a new RAM 2500 diesel to pull this new load. However after checking the numbers I realized that even though I would have more than enough towing capability with the new 2500, my payload numbers were concerning. I then looked at the costs and payload numbers to move up to a 3500 diesel. The 3500 has a much greater payload capacity and the cost difference was a little over $2k. The choice was clear and we are very pleased with our new RAM 3500 diesel.

From your numbers, you have an F150 with the "Max Tow" package. This is often stocked by Ford dealers and is a little misleading. This gets you the trailer towing provisions, but the truck is still riding on passenger car tires which is its most significant weakness for towing a large trailer.

To stay with an F150, you should have the "Heavy Duty Payload" option. You will probably have to get a brochure and point this option out to your dealer, because most don't seem to know that it even exists. This gets you LT "truck" tires, heavier suspension and will take your payload into the 2500 lb range.

The "traditional" 5th wheel estimate of pin weight is 20% to 25%. Other 150 Series Reflection owners have reported that they are on the lighter side of this estimate. A lot depends on how you load the trailer and how much additional stuff you will be carrying in the truck. UVW is 7300 lbs and dry pin weight is 1325. 18% on the pin. GVWR is 2700 lbs over UVW. I think you would have trouble loading that much weight into this trailer. 1000 lbs for contents would be a more reasonable estimate (if you tow with empty tanks). If pin weight goes to 20% of 8300 lbs, you would be at a pin weight of 1660 lbs.

As referenced earlier and per my signature, I have been running my HDPP F150 at close to its limits for 5 years and 25,000 towing miles.

Also keep in mind that the advertised hitch weight on Grand Design's website may not be the same as the trailer you purchase. We ordered our 303RLS and the advertised hitch weight was 1796 but ours is actually 1820. It depends on any options that you may have ordered with your trailer.
