  • Imagine 2400BH Bumper

Not sure this is the right forum but here goes...

I was researching bumper load capacity to see if I could add an external waste tank holder that clamps on the bumper. I read in owner's manual that "The rear bumper of your RV is not designed to carry cargo." Well that confused me because I got the tank holder idea because my spare tire holder is clamped to the bumper using Square U-Bolts which is the same method the tank holder would use. The fact that the spare tire is mounted there means that either the bumper does actually have some cargo carrying capacity or the spare shouldn't have been placed there and I need to move the spare tire.

I'm wonder if anyone knows which is right. Does the bumper have some limited cargo carrying capacity and, if so, what is it? or should the spare have been placed elsewhere to avoid future bumper issues?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Grand Design has gone back and forth between a rear bumper and no rear bumper with a load carrying receiver. The rear bumper is typically very thin walled and suitable only for carrying a sewer hose. There are multiple pictures on the internet of RV bumpers failing due to attached loads. Attached picture is just one example. If your RV came from the factory with the spare tire bracket attached to the bumper, your bumper may be more substantial than most. This would be worth a call to Customer Service to confirm.

I had a spare tire carrier on our previous TT and kept it close to one side where the frame attaches to the bumper but not blocking the tail lights. Use it this way for 7 years with no issue. I did this to limit the twisting of the bumper as much as possible. A portable sewer tank does not weigh much and if you kept it to the opposite side as the spare tire you may be alright. I do agree with Rob above that the bumpers are less than "strong" for carrying weight. You could try it but be advised to keep an eye on it so you do not have something falling off while traveling. You could have a weld shop add some support if they are capable.

Cate&Rob .... YIKES! lol. The wife has now nixed my "waste tank on the bumper" plan. . But thanks because now obviously, I'll look much closer at how to mount this thing safely. Always a good thing to have the proper info necessary to make a safe decision. Thanks again.

I have the 36 gallon Rhino tote that weighs 45 pounds. We just bought ours while on our last trip and mount it to the ladder which worked great.
