  • 2019 297RSTS factory trailer hitch 300lb rating

Hi all, was wondering if anybody knew why the rating was so low? Structurally it would appear to be capable of a lot higher weight rating? Is it to do with the "see-saw" effect / as in adding more weight than that may impact the tongue weight too much? Is it that the frame isn't capable of supporting more? The "bounce" effect being so far back from the axles?
Reason I ask is I would like to add a scooter carrying rack on the back. Total weight with rack and scooter would be 550lbs. I am not concerned with tongue weight issue as I am well above the claimed stock tongue weight after mods. . Do not operate rig off pavement so always on relatively smooth pavement. Main concern is frame integrity.. I would be adding additional tie downs to stop/reduce any movement of the rack. Thoughts??

I currently have mine out on my workbench as I intend to add additional hitch sockets to it. It is a monster piece of steel but unfortunately the whole assembly is held only by two bolts on either end and they are not even grade 8, The actual fixing to the chassis is what looks to be the weak point and hence the reason for the low rating. I intend to weld it back in place after making sure the chassis is also substantially reinforced in that area.

It is not just the hitch but the frame as well. You also need to remember that the back of the trailer has lots of bounce and a lot of stress as it bounces. Back of the trailer has the most movement and highest stresses from that movement than anywhere else on the trailer. Just ask people with a rear kitchen about stuff all over the place after travelling.

K, have decided not to add anything to rear hitch. Seems way more negative than positive... Thanks for your input.
